A haunting musical about Vietnam War veterans is playing at Woodstock Arts (formerly Elm Street Cultural Arts Village) in downtown Woodstock through November 14.

Originally scheduled for 2020, the Woodstock Arts team has been anticipating and rescheduling Dogfight for quite some time. The musical is a romantic and heartbreaking theatrical journey inspired by the veteran experience of the Vietnam War and the 1991 Warner Brothers film of the same name. In it, a young soldier learns empathy when he plays a cruel joke on an unsuspecting girl.

Check out photos from the show below!

In the words of the theatre...

“Set against the backdrop of a changing, tumultuous time in America, Dogfight is a complex and hauntingly beautiful story about the power and importance of loving empathy in a world built to stifle it. It is an especially important story to tell now, with striking social parallels between today and our not-so-distant past of 1963. Dogfight also shows us that the ‘antiquated’ values and attitudes present in the musical are still with us today.”

About Dogfight

On November 21, 1963, three young Marines set out for a final night of debauchery, partying and even a little trouble on the eve of their deployment to Southeast Asia. When Corporal Eddie Birdlace meets Rose, an awkward and idealistic waitress he enlists to win a cruel bet with his fellow recruits, she rewrites the rules of the game and teaches him the power of compassion. Based on the 1991 Warner Brothers film of the same name, Dogfight was originally produced Off-Broadway in 2012. It features music/lyrics by the Oscar, Grammy and Tony Award-winning duo known as Pasek & Paul, who are now known for writing Dear Evan Hansen, The Greatest Showman, and the lyrics to La La Land

Content Notice

After more than two years of construction, Aurora Theatre and the City of Lawrenceville are proud to announce that the highly-anticipated $35 million Lawrenceville Arts Center is ready to welcome the public for its debut season.

In honor of its completion, the arts center hosted “A Million Dreams Grand Opening Celebration” Oct. 22-24. The event featured tours, exclusive experiences, and performances from Aurora favorites.

Check out photos from the celebratory events below!

In the words of the theatre...

“Gearing up to program and manage this massive expansion while attempting to raise $5 million during a pandemic is not how I imagined this process would begin. But none of this has dampened our enthusiasm for the Grand Opening Celebration. Small groups experiencing a personal and immersive introduction is much better than any rubber chicken gala. I am as excited as I have ever been about what the Lawrenceville Arts Center will mean for the community. The possibilities are endless.”

-Anthony Rodriguez, Aurora Theatre President and CEO & Co-Founder

Actor’s Express continues its 34th season with the World Premiere production of Hometown Boy by Georgia native Keiko Green, opening in November. Green is both an actress and award-winning playwright who often writes about the collision of cultures. Her original work spans from comedy to horror and everything in between, “spinning narratives to centralize characters that are usually plot devices.” Hometown Boy is about being an outsider and asks the age-old question, "Can you really go home again?"

Check out promo shots and a trailer below!

In the words of the theatre

“Keiko Green is a Georgia native who has crafted a sublimely affecting piece of theatre that refracts a Southern Gothic milieu through an Asian-American lens. I had the good fortune of working as Dramaturg on a workshop of the play a little over a year ago at the Kennedy Center, and working with Keiko was an amazing experience and a real highlight for me. Since Keiko is a native of Marietta, doing her play for Actor’s Express audiences here in Atlanta is a bit of a homecoming for her, and that’s very exciting.”

-Artistic Director Freddie Ashley

About Hometown Boy

by Keiko Green

Directed by Rebecca Wear

November 3 - 28, 2021

That stench in the air isn’t just his father’s decaying house, but the rotten core of long-buried secrets teeming just under the surface and ready to explode.

California-based Rebecca Wear directs the six-person cast, which includes Ryan Vo, Allison Dayne, Michelle Pokopac, Glenn Kubota, Daniel Parvis and Chris Kayser.

As the Heathers would say, "It'll be very."

As Heathers concludes its run at Oglethorpe's Conant Performing Arts Center, we've got some action shots from the cult classic musical. Check them out below!

Actor’s Express continues its 34th season with the Off-Broadway hit musical Heathers by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe based on the 1989 cult classic film starring Winona Ryder. Performed as a collaboration with Oglethorpe University Theatre, the show runs through October 17, 2021 at Oglethorpe's Conant Performing Arts Center (4484 Peachtree Road).

Actor's Express says...

“It means so much to Actor’s Express to collaborate with our friends at Oglethorpe University. I believe a special kind of energy can spark when you gather artists from varying stages of experience into one collaborative process. We believe not only that the OU students can learn a great deal from their professional colleagues, but that the students will offer their own unique insights in return.”- Freddie Ashley (Artistic Director, Actor’s Express)

Oglethorpe University says...

“Oglethorpe has a long tradition of partnering with Atlanta’s best professional theatres beginning with the founding of Georgia Shakespeare on our campus many years ago. Along with Georgia Shakespeare, we’ve partnered with the Alliance Theatre, Horizon Theatre, and Georgia Ensemble Theatre in recent years. All of these partnerships have provided opportunities for students to work alongside professionals in different capacities, but they were not co-productions. What’s exciting about the Actor’s Express partnership is that it is a genuine co-production featuring a large number of Oglethorpe students in the cast as well as our theatre faculty and staff playing key roles in the design and production team. This kind of collaboration is really unique and provides our students a professionally-oriented and high-impact educational opportunity.” -Matt Huff (Theatre Director, Oglethorpe University)

Luckie Street is abuzz once more with a new play from Theatrical Outfit.

As Encore Atlanta previously reported, Theatrical Outfit has returned to the stage with its first live production in nearly 18 months – An Iliad by Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare (Based On Homer’s The Iliad, translated by Robert Fagles). Starring Suzi Bass Award-winner Lee Osorio and renowned musician Deisha Oliver, audiences will be taken on a fantastical journey nearly 3,000 years in the making. An Iliad will run at Balzer Theater at Herren’s in the heart of Downtown Atlanta until October 10, 2021.

Take a look at these photos from the show, featuring Lee Osorio!

In the words of An Iliad director and TO Artistic Director Matt Torney

“When looking for a play to reopen the theatre to live audiences after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down, we wanted to tell a story that resonated with the scale of what we have all lived through, and to celebrate the storytelling power of live theatre. By going back in time to an ancient story, and exploring it again in a modern context, An Iliad connects the past year to the broad sweep of history, and to common themes of humanity, chaos, and rebirth.”

About An Iliad

Has anything really changed since the Trojan War? Visionary creators Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare have reimagined Homer’s tragic poem with dazzling theatricality and dark humor. As we emerge from a global pandemic, return to the theater for this sweeping account of humanity’s unshakable attraction to war and the heroes that rise and fall in times of chaos.

Designers

Torney leads a group of Atlanta designers that includes Scenic Design by Lizz Horvath, Costume Design by Alan Yeong, Lighting Design by Ben Rawson, Co-Sound Design & Original Composition by Mikaela Fraser & Rashaad Pierre, Original Composition by Deisha Oliver, and Properties Design by Nick Battaglia.

Aurora Theatre has returned to in-person performances with a three-weekend run of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song and Dance, now through September 12. Starring India Tyree, this '80s Broadway classic features a story told entirely through song in Act I and entirely in dance in Act II.

In the words of Aurora Theatre

"I have been entranced by Song and Dance since the early 80s when my best friend returned from London and talked incessantly about how great this show was there. I have dreamed about producing it since.

"I worked hard to get the opportunity to produce this show and know it will resonate with today’s audiences the same way it resonated with me. We are giving the piece a contemporary context. I cannot imagine a better way to demonstrate that ARTISTS are essential workers.”

-Co-Founder and Associate Producer Ann-Carol Pence
