Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre has announced updates to its 2020/21 season, including a new “Under The Tent” series to provide more socially-distanced performance options.  The “Under the Tent” series will include a concert staging of the Broadway hit WORKING: A MUSICAL, as well as concert-style performances of BEAUTIFUL BLACKBIRD LIVE and SONGS TO GROW ON for youth and families.  The tent will be erected on Callaway Plaza adjacent to the Alliance Theatre’s home at the Woodruff Arts Center.

“Our Under the Tent series offers inspiring entertainment, socially distanced seating, CDC-recommended safety protocols, and – most importantly – a step back toward sharing theatre together as artists and audience,” said Susan V. Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director.

Safety precautions

Following the success of the Alliance’s drive-in production of A Christmas Carol: The Live Radio Play, the “Under the Tent” series will utilize enhanced COVID safety procedures including open-air performance, socially distanced seating in two- and four-person pods, contactless entry, and required use of face masks.  Visit their FAQs for additional details.

Adjusted performances

To accommodate these changes and due to continuing circumstances related to COVID-19, the following previously announced productions are being adjusted. HANDS UP will move to the 2021/22 season and will open the Hertz Stage in Fall 2021.  TONI STONE will also move to the 2021/22 season with timing to be determined.  ACCIDENTAL HEROES has been cancelled at this time but may be reprogrammed in another season. DATA, winner of the 2021 Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, will be available to stream in May on the Alliance’s streaming platform Alliance Theatre Anywhere.

Visit AllianceTheatre.org for more information.

The Atlanta Opera has released three "Love Letters to Atlanta," the first in a new video series featuring the company’s ensemble of international and world-class singers singing their favorite songs in places woven into the fabric of Atlanta’s musical history.

These first videos, featuring Atlanta Opera Company Players members Jamie Barton, Kevin Burdette and Morris Robinson, are offered free now through February 14th on the company’s Spotlight Media streaming service.

The Atlanta Opera is planning additional Love Letter recordings in 2021 featuring other members of Company Players and other interesting locations. Future videos will be available on Spotlight Media, as well. Each video runs between 11 minutes to 15 minutes, including a short interview and the performance.

“Each Love Letter, featuring an iconic singer and iconic location, is designed to stand on its own, telling an authentic story about our connection to Atlanta,” said Carl W. Knobloch General & Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun, who curated the project and conducted the interviews. “Once all the letters are finished, we will compile them into a single film that creates a mosaic and tells a greater story about our appreciation toward our home.”

Production of these videos and other Spotlight Media’s efforts was led by Ashley Mirakian, The Atlanta Opera’s chief of marketing & audience development and Spotlight Media’s executive producer. The digital media team also includes Felipe Barral, an Emmy-award winning filmmaker who serves as Spotlight Media’s director of digital media; and Zvulun.

“One of the most exciting things about our Company Players is their connection to Atlanta, Georgia and the southeast. These Love Letters are an important way for us to give back and say thank you to this city and its people,” Mirakian said. “If we can celebrate our own iconic cultural heritage during this tough time, that’s our goal.”

Watch the first three love letters!

Jamie Barton, Georgia On My Mind (Carmichael)

Barton, a Georgia native and Atlanta resident, selected Georgia On My Mind because it reminds her of the importance of home, and particularly the years she spent away, learning her craft at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., the hometown of songwriter Hoagy Carmichael.

“It was the first time I had ever moved away from home,” Barton said in the interview included in the video. “I think it was on my playlist at that point for probably the entire time I was at IU. I loved that song because it did remind me of that little call I that always feel when I’m too far away from where I came from.”

She explained that she picked the Fox Theatre in Atlanta because it’s the place of some of her fondest childhood memories. Growing up outside of Rome, Ga., the rare trip to Atlanta usually included taking in a performance at the Fox.

Barton, a superstar mezzo-soprano whose honors include the Beverly Sills Artist Award, Richard Tucker Award, first prize at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition and 2020 Personality of the Year at the BBC Music Magazine Awards, is “an artist whose time truly has come” (Opera magazine). In 2019, she made her role debut as Sister Helen Prejean in The Atlanta Opera’s celebrated Southeast premiere of Dead Man Walking.

Kevin Burdette, If Ever I Would Leave You (Lerner & Loewe)

Burdette, who moved to Atlanta several years ago, makes a connection with the city’s past by performing at the Atlanta Civic Center Auditorium.  Though it has been closed for several years, the Civic Center was the final home to the wildly successful Metropolitan Opera summer opera tour that lasted for 75 years, bringing operatic legends to the city.

“If we’re going to tell our story right, we have to know what came before, we have to know the truths that predate us so we can find our own voice and our own truth,” Burdette said in his interview. “To be in a space, where you know all the great singers of generations before you have sung, you want to touch the walls they touched, and stand on the stage and feel their vibrations that are someway still in the floor. It’s a moving experience.”

His song, selected from the Tony Award-winning musical and movie Camelot, is a straight up love song, lyrically expressing a love that endures in every season.

Burdette, a bass, has performed for Atlanta audiences in Dead Man WalkingThe Pirates of Penzance, and The Abduction from the Seraglio. Dubbed “the Robin Williams of opera” (The New York Times), he serves on the faculty of The Atlanta Opera Studio, the company’s first young artist program, and may be heard on the Metropolitan Opera’s Grammy- and Diapason d’Or-winning Deutsche Grammophon recording of The Tempest.

Morris Robinson, The Impossible Dream (Leigh & Darion)

In this entry, Robinson, a lifelong Atlanta-area resident, reminisces about seeing jazz performances at the Fox with his father and the importance his mother had on his career.

In his interview, Morris explained that he chose the show-stopping "The Impossible Dream" from the Broadway hit Man of La Mancha because it was the song he sung in his chorus audition at North Atlanta High School, an audition his mother insisted he do.

“It makes me think about my mom. Maybe she saw something I didn’t see. Maybe she knew what it was going to be,” Robinson said. “As soon as I started singing opera professionally, she died. She never got to see all this stuff. And I’ve sung all over the world.  That audition, that moment, formulated who I am.”

Robinson boasts a bass “so deep and assured it’s as if a vibration goes through the audience every time he opens his mouth” (Globe and Mail, Canada). In The Atlanta Opera’s staging of Porgy and Bess, he sang the male lead, which was previously the vehicle for his acclaimed debut at La Scala. He also recently starred at the Metropolitan Opera in The Magic Flute. Robinson made his Atlanta Opera debut in 2010’s Aida, and has also been seen in 2015’s Rigoletto

Barton, Burdette and Robinson, along with Michael Mayes, form The Atlanta Opera’s Artistic Advisory Council, counseling the company on a range of artistic matters.

Visit Atlanta Opera's Spotlight Media for more on-demand opera performances.

The Grammy® Award-winning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has announced its plans to continue presenting concerts in its 2020/21 season via digital broadcasts, continuing its virtual Behind the Curtain Series presented by Delta. The concerts will continue to be recorded in Atlanta Symphony Hall without a live audience and available to view for current 2020/21 subscribers, new Virtual Members or pay-per-view access.

“While nothing can replace the thrilling experience of hearing a performance live and in person, our pivot to virtual concerts this fall has been wildly successful, allowing the Orchestra to continue making music and sharing it with an even broader audience than before. Thanks to the creativity and determination of the ASO musicians, administrative staff and Board of Directors, our Behind the Stage series continues to provide inspiring, diverse, fresh and made-for-Atlanta musical experiences throughout the first half of 2021.

"We are especially thankful to our subscribers and donors, who have sustained the orchestra through this challenging year and to our new Virtual Members who support the future of music; and we look forward to expanding our audience with a new pay-per-program option. What a great pleasure it has been to find this new sense of community through virtual concert experiences with ASO fans in Atlanta and far beyond.”

-Executive Director Jennifer Barlament

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will make future decisions regarding in‑person concerts in Symphony Hall based on the health and safety of both musicians and patrons. Streaming of concerts will continue throughout the 2020/21 season, affording subscribers and virtual members the opportunity to enjoy the ASO's complete 76th season from the comfort of their home.

In addition to beloved and familiar works, the 13 spring 2021 Behind the Curtain concerts feature works by nine living composers, including Tyshawn Sorey, Sarah Gibson, Missy Mazzoli, Michael Abels, Clarice Assad, Carlos Simon, Jimmy López, Gabriela Lena Frank and Aaron Zigman.

Most of the Behind the Curtain concerts from January through June 2021 will introduce at least one new work to the Orchestra’s repertoire, with 10 ASO premieres and a world premiere of The Book of Spells by Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad, performed by The Merian Ensemble. The Merian Ensemble is a chamber music group dedicated to the exploration of works by women, composed of ASO musicians Christina Smith (Principal Flute), Elisabeth Remy Johnson (Principal Harp), Emily Brebach (English Horn), Marci Gurnow (Clarinet), Jessica Oudin (Viola). Additional ASO premieres include William Grant Still’s Wood Notes, Fanny Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Tyshawn Sorey’s For Roscoe Mitchell, Carlos Simon’s An Elegy: A Cry From The Grave and more.

“In this challenging and uncertain period, I am so grateful that we have been able to find new avenues to continue our commitment to presenting great symphonic music,” said Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Music Director Robert Spano. “We have configured our programming for smaller ensembles to allow proper social distancing and other safety protocols, and with travel restrictions, we have also placed a greater focus on local talent as well as ASO principal musicians as featured soloists. We are thrilled to be able to share the talents of these composers and performers, and connect to our listeners, who are as important to music- making as the performers themselves.”

-ASO Music Director Robert Spano

Music Director Robert Spano will conduct four concerts, and Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles will lead two programs. Guest conductorinclude Maxim Emelyanychev, Gemma New, Nathalie Stutzmann, Hannu Lintu, Andrew Manze, James Gaffigan and Miguel Harth-Bedoya.

In addition to The Merian Ensemble, the ASO will also feature Concertmaster David Coucheron as a soloist. Featured guest artists include Robert McDuffie (violin), Seth Parker Woods (cello), Randall Goosby (violin), Pedja Mužijević (piano), Yefim Bronfman (piano), Irene Roberts (mezzo-soprano), Talise Trevigne (soprano), Stephen Hough (piano), Augustin Hadelich (violin), Jean-Yves Thibaudet (piano), Jessica Rivera (soprano).

A Bach and Beyond celebration will close out the season. More details to be announced in the coming weeks.

Behind the name

This year’s festival is named in honor of Graham Martin, a longtime trustee, advocate, and friend of TO who passed away in October of 2020. Martin served as TO’s Board Chair for 5 years and was instrumental in the creation of TO’s home at the Balzer Theater at Herren's, whose rehearsal hall bears his name. Gifts given in his memory provided funding for this year’s Unexpected Play Festival.

From the creators

“The Unexpected Festival is an incredible opportunity for local artists and WTP members, and working with TO is a dream. We love this partnership. WTP is looking forward to seeing what these playwrights and their amazing teams produce in January. We hope you'll join us and share your response after the readings!” -Amber Bradshaw, WTP Managing Artistic Director

"We are thrilled to be partnering with WTP on another new play festival. Atlanta is such a hotbed of talent and creativity, and one of the great joys of my first season at Theatrical Outfit has been getting to know the remarkable writers who call Atlanta home.  We want to offer a home for these playwrights, where they can develop their work with amazing artists and a supportive audience, and to showcase the extraordinary talent our great city has offer." - Matt Torney, TO Artistic Director

Netflix might have all the new bingeworthy shows, and Disney might have all the nostalgia-inducing movies, but where is the opera fan's streaming destination? Some Atlanta locals now have the answer.

Quick facts

The Atlanta Opera has launched Spotlight Media, a streaming service for local opera on-demand. Each month, they will roll out a substantial new streaming bundle, combining concerts, special recordings, and behind-the-scenes footage with original opera productions captured live in the company’s “Big Tent” series.

About Spotlight Media

Funded with support from a $500,000 gift from the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation, the new subscription service is the latest initiative from Atlanta’s Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. General & Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun, the only representative of an American opera house invited to speak at the upcoming Opera Europa conference on COVID-19 and the arts.

Each subscription to the Atlanta Opera Spotlight Media will grant unlimited access to the company’s gated content for a full year. The service kicked off with Pagliacci and The Kaiser of Atlantis, the first two productions in the “Big Tent” series. Captured in a custom-designed open-air tent on a baseball field at Oglethorpe University, both films place the audience on stage among the singers.

About those tickets...

Subscriptions are $99 annually and can be purchased on the Atlanta Opera's website here.

The Aurora Theatre is streaming its third annual This Wonderful Life now through January 1. As the name would suggest, this is an adaptation of It's a Wonderful Life, but the twist is that it's performed by one storyteller. The multi-talented Jeremy Aggers reprises the role(s) for which he received the 2019 Suzi Bass Award, starring as everyone from little Zuzu to mean old Mr. Potter.

About This Wonderful Life

This hilariously-touching stage adaptation of one of the most popular and heartwarming films ever made stars Atlanta’s own Jeremy Aggers (Singles in Agriculture, Hands on a Hardbody). Mr. Aggers inhabits all of the wonderful characters from Clarence, Mr. Potter, Uncle Billy, Mary, Mr. Gower, yes even Zuzu, as well as the undeniably iconic George Bailey, who learns that it takes a lot more than money to be the richest man in town. Written by Steve Murray and conceived by Mark Setlock, Justin Anderson returns to direct.

About Jeremy Aggers

Jeremy Aggers is an actor, audiobook narrator, and musician based in Atlanta. This is Jeremy’s fourth show at Aurora. His last role here, as Joel in Singles In Agriculture, was one of his favorites of his career. Some of his other favorite roles include Reese in Edward Foote (Alliance Theatre), Mr. Tumnus in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (Alliance Theatre), Buddy in The Buddy Holly Story (Georgia Ensemble), and Donald Mackenzie in Astoria at Portland Center Stage. Look for his audiobooks on the magical internet.

Pivoting from Stage to Screen: Terry Burrell on Alliance, Acting, and Atlanta

by Sally Henry Fuller and Ashley Elliott

When Terry Burrell is asked how she feels about A Very Terry Christmas, the first thing she says is, “Gratitude. Tremendous, tremendous gratitude.”

A seasoned Atlanta and Broadway performer, Terry was most recently seen at the Alliance online in her dual cabaret We’re Still Here with fellow Broadway and local star Courtenay Collins. She says she is particularly grateful that at a time when many performers are out of work, she gets to not only return to the stage (and screen) but also reconnect with her Alliance family.

“Especially when you're doing a show like A Christmas Carol, where you're working ten shows in a week, you’re together a lot,” Terry shares. “One of the greatest parts of doing A Very Terry Christmas was to see the crew again and that they could work and that we were working on this project together. I'm working with people whom I love, and they're working with somebody they love. I'm telling you, it was like a family reunion! It was just wonderful. They're totally in my corner. Totally. I really trusted everybody on this project.”

Leading A Very Terry Christmas may seem like a natural step for a multi-talented performer who has done multiple cabarets this year alone, but on-camera acting has not historically been her comfort zone.

“I don't do film and television, as a rule,” Terry tells us. “I do theatre. I had somehow talked myself into thinking that I couldn't do film or television because the camera didn't like my face. I don't know where I came up with that.”

Despite her hesitation, the support of the Alliance team helped Terry warm up to the idea.

"[Line Producer] Tinashe Kajese-Bolden walked up to me one day, and she said, ‘The camera loves your face!’” she shares. “These are people who, when they say something to you, they mean it. They would never say something they didn't mean or be disrespectful in that way. I knew [Videographer Felipe] Barral from filming Backstage and Other Stories at Synchronicity Theatre a few weeks ago, so I know how gifted he is, like everybody else, so I knew I was in good hands.”

Terry has long since blazed through her initial misgivings and gone all-in  with this unique show that she believes is very suited to her.

“The sense of it being built around me really didn't kick in until maybe a week later. And then I started going, ‘Wait a minute!’” Terry recalls. “[Director Susan Booth] gave me the choice of doing this onstage without an audience or going around the city, and I said, ‘Around the city! Nobody's doing this. It's going to be very different but we’re going to make friends.’”

And make friends she did, bubbling over with excitement as she recalls visiting Atlanta’s greatest hits including the Varsity, Georgia Aquarium, Zoo Atlanta, the College Football Hall of Fame, and particularly SkyView Atlanta.

“Have you been? GO! You have to go,” she says. “I thought that it was the kind of ride where you're on the outside, but they are actual gondolas. They look like Cinderella’s carriage. You get in and they close the doors, and then you take this very slow revolve when you can literally look out at the entire city. I always think of downtown [Atlanta] as the land of Oz because when I'm approaching it; it's just so beautiful.”

For Terry, this whole experience has been like a dream.

“The fact that I had this amazing opportunity to do this – who gets a film that’s written around them? I mean, come on! By the end of the day my feet were throbbing but there was this ball of sunshine in my being because I suddenly thought about what I was doing.”

“If there's any trepidation,” Terry says, “it would be because I want it to be really, really good. I want it to be everything that the Alliance wants it to be for people who are watching it. This is our gift to the city of Atlanta – and it’s an incredible city.”

We can’t help but agree.
