Found Stages Combines Theatre and Escape Rooms in Immersive Zoom Play, THE SHIFT March 13-27

A theatre company that has been known for having no walls is taking that to a new and very literal level.

Quick facts

In partnership with the 2021 Atlanta Science Festival, Found Stages has created a Zoom-specific play, The Shift, streaming March 13-27. The interactive piece gives audiences a role to play in this post-apocalyptic story which imagines the United States after droughts caused by climate change have dried up water sources and depleted reservoirs.

In the words of the creators

The Shift is not a play adapted for zoom; it is a play written for zoom,” asserts Found Stages Co-Founder Neeley Gossett, who is one of the show’s writers. “This play can only be done virtually, and it relies on the audience working together to solve puzzles, like an escape room. It is completely different from any other zoom play you’ve seen.”

About The Shift

In a world vaguely similar to our own... "The Shift" has made life as we used to know it obsolete. A years-long drought has led to a shortage of natural resources. Water is scarce. Above the Fault Line, a greedy bottling plant has dammed up the river. Above Faulters receive clean bottled water, but those in Below Fault are left with barely enough to survive. The Committee has decided to take matters into their own hands. But they need YOUR help! Join your fellow citizens and guide three female engineers of the rebellion as they infiltrate the plant and reroute the water system.

Radio theatre is getting a 21st century comeback.

On Friday, Actor’s Express will launch its first-ever serialized podcast series, Crossroads. This comes about as a commission from the theatre to six BIPOC Atlanta writers to write an original adventure drama taking place throughout time and space.

In the words of the company

"As an African-American woman, the fight for equality, diversity, and inclusion in theatre is daunting at times. On certain days theatre seems to make significant progress. On other days, it seems the theatre industry is in the same place that it was 50 years ago—with my voice being silenced, misinterpreted, or only used to tell the African-American culture story."

"I used the word "daunting" because, in my mind, it implies the struggle but also the continuation of working toward a better tomorrow. When assembling this cohort of playwrights, I wanted to amplify people of color's voices, but I also wanted them to feel free to write about life's intersectionality. Crossroads has turned into a beautiful, adventurous story by people of color, about people of color, and for people of color."

-Amanda Washington, Crossroads director

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, Actor’s Express has been experimenting with different ways to bring stories to our audiences. Like most other theatres during this time, we have sought ways to turn the challenges of the moment into opportunities to expand our notions of what theatre can be."

"Amanda Washington, our National New Play Network Producer in Residence, had a podcast drama idea. She and I brainstormed about the shape it would take, and we are excited by the process.”

-Freddie Ashley, AE Artistic Director

About Crossroads

It is the journey of living and what someone will sacrifice in order to live.

Three friends feel stuck in their lives in a dead-end town. One evening, they kill time in an abandoned playground and fantasize about the changes they’d make in their lives if given the chance to trade their souls. Their innocent game unwittingly catapults them into a dangerous adventure that hurdles them through time and space into a strange world that brings them face-to-face with the Devil herself. Crossroads challenges concepts of Earth and Hell, and explores the limits we’ll go to in the search of life, happiness and liberation.

“Crossroads” was made possible by a grant from the National New Play Network and Lead Sponsors Mark Williamson and John and Pat Valleroy.

Meet the Cast

Listen

Crossroads will have seven episodes, streaming on Apple and Spotify. Patrons may pre-subscribe now and will be notified when new episodes are uploaded after the first one drops tomorrow. Crossroads can also be found on the Actor’s Express website: actors-express.com/events/crossroads.

The Gainesville Theatre Alliance is using resources across different media to bring audiences a theatre experience.

GTA will collaborate with University of North Georgia's Film & Digital Media department to stream free performances of Songs for a New World and The Tempest in late spring. These will be filmed, edited, and released digitally. The theatre company has already set a precedent of collaboration, with GTA itself being made of theatre departments from both Brenau University and University of North Georgia.

From the Company

“There exists a natural fit between film and theatre that  both departments at UNG will continue to pursue extending even past our production process and moving into collaborations with programs of study.”

-GTA Artistic Director and UNG Head of Theatre Jayme McGhan

Spring 2021 at GTA

Songs for a New World

Music & Lyrics by Jason Robert Brown
Streaming Dates TBD
MPAA-equivalent rating: PG

Songs for a New World by Jason Robert Brown (his introduction to Broadway) asks the audience to follow a series of individuals into the breach to find something new. Surrounded by guides, the seekers in this song cycle traverse the unknown to find happiness, contentment, and rest—safe in the knowledge that everyone needs some help along the way.

With a cast of eighteen rather than Broadway’s four, Gainesville Theatre Alliance’s take on this experimental production, directed by Tracey Elaine Chessum (GTA Associate Artistic Director and Brenau University Chair of Theatre), seeks to explore the communities that surround us during the journeys of life.

The Tempest

by William Shakespeare

Streaming Dates TBD
MPAA-equivalent rating: PG

William Shakespeare’s The Tempest begins in an abandoned shipwreck, where the characters proceed to ‘find the story of the tempest’ by searching through the wreckage and discovering the pieces left behind.

This production, directed by GTA BFA Acting Program Director and University of North Georgia Associate Professor of Theatre Zechariah Pierce, is an exploration in physical storytelling, particularly through masked (theatrical, not surgical) characterization. The ideas of family, forgiveness, power struggle, innocence, love, and magic are all brought to life through stylized physical humor that only this type of theatre can provide.

“This idea of discovering the story also parallels my process as a director,” says Pierce, “as I heavily rely on a deep collaboration with my actors and how they interpret the story and their characters.”

On Broadway

Thursday, February 25 at 12:00 PM (for 72 hours in the Virtual Cinema)

Broadway’s decline and resurgence dates to the late ‘60s, when New York City faced bankruptcy, and 42nd Street was a cesspool of junkies, hustlers and strip clubs. The Shubert Organization was first to the rescue, investing in novel works that revived the theater district. Myriad stage legends narrate Broadway’s return from the brink, their tales enhanced by a wildly captivating wealth of performance clips. Oren Jacoby’s love letter to the Great White Way is a reminder of both the cultural void left in the pandemic’s wake, and the enormous creative influence of Jewish Americans in musical theater. While the theatre community has endured a lot of changes, Theatrical Outfit has had a particularly surprising year.

When you-know-what hit last spring, longtime Artistic Director Tom Key was on the home stretch of his retirement with plans for Matt Torney to pick up the torch. Torney had about enough time to announce plans for his debut season before it became clear execution of any of those plans would be challenging, if not impossible.

In regrouping for a new 2020/21 season, the team adapted by producing some digital programming in the fall and even hired a new associate artistic director at the beginning of 2021. So as a culmination of these changes, the theatre has just announced a fully reworked digital spring season, accessible to patrons everywhere.

From Theatrical Outfit

“I am thrilled with the response we have gotten for our digital programming so far, and am excited to share these exceptional plays with Atlanta audiences this Spring."

"When putting this season together, we challenged ourselves to look for plays that both engaged directly with the crucial questions of 2021 and the COVID recovery and also allowed our audience escape into new worlds and explore ideas in fresh and exciting ways. The three plays also create a path towards reopening this fall, especially the live stream of Fires in the Mirror which will feel as close to live theatre as you can get at home!”

-Matt Torney, Theatrical Outfit Artistic Director
