My father wasn’t a musician, but he did love singing. When he was just 65 years old, he was diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment. It started with forgetting or mixing up words and progressed rapidly over the next five years until he could no longer speak.

As was our tradition, we went to Christmas Eve services together one year in the middle of his disease progression and he wasn’t talking very much. That night, however, as the organ began playing “Silent Night,” my father, who had not spoken without difficulty in some years, sang every word of every verse to the hymn. It remains to this day the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard.

How is it that someone in the middle of Early-onset Alzheimer’s was able to sing a favorite hymn, but not remember my childhood nickname? That’s what researchers at the National Institute of Health (NIH), among other organizations, are trying to figure out. Increasing numbers of studies and research are proving music and art therapies to be instrumental tools in addressing multiple mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, as well as complex neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.

One of the leading advocates for this research is world-renowned soprano Renée Fleming, a five-time Grammy® Award-winning singer who takes the stage in Symphony Hall on April 11 and 13 with Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann and the ASO. In addition to two performances of Richard Strauss songs, Fleming will host a “Music and Mind” event at the Woodruff Arts Center on Friday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m. The panel discussion, moderated by CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, will explore how music can be used to understand and treat complex brain disorders and mental health issues, like Alzheimer’s and PTSD.

In 2016, Fleming became an essential part of the Sound Health Initiative, a partnership with NIH and the Kennedy Center to study how listening, performing or creating music works in the brain, which in turn could lead to more therapy and treatment for patients with neurological disorders. Through the Sound Health Initiative, the NIH has awarded $20 million in funding for music and neuroscience research over the next five years.

Her work with Sound Health led Fleming to create her “Music and Mind” presentation, which further explores the impact of music on the brain in areas like child development, depression, loneliness, and social issues. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when the live “Music and Mind” events were shuttered, she turned the presentations into a live-streamed series on YouTube, reaching more than 665,00 viewers in 70 countries. According to Fleming, her reasons for supporting the research into music and mental health are personal. She told the Washington Post in an interview last year that she has, for years, suffered from somatic pain before performances. “It’s pain that your brain and body are making up so that you can be distracted from what’s distressing you, which in my case was performance pressure.”

Brain pathways, like our muscles, are strengthened when exercised or used. When they aren’t used, the brain shuts them down or finds another use for those pathways. Music, however, uses so many of those pathways, that it keeps them all strong and in use which can keep things like cognitive function from declining. Musicians, in particular, use more of their brain pathways than non-musicians, and are more likely to use both halves of the brain when playing music or performing exercises like detecting pitch.

But it’s not just physical health that is impacted by music—mental health is also improved and strengthened with music therapy. Listening to music activates and synchronizes the emotional regions in the brain, releases dopamine, and lowers stress. This is why we often get emotional listening to music associated with a strong memory, and why music therapy is becoming more popular in treating issues like PTSD.

Music can also help with pain management. Music-based therapies have been shown to improve chronic pain, which as many of 55 percent of the population worldwide reports experiencing. Because music therapy is non-pharmaceutical pain management, it’s less expensive than some forms of treatment and has no risk of addiction or other major side effects.

Music relaxes us, inspires us, and heals us on many levels. Most music lovers know that on an instinctive level, but with new research and studies, there’s scientific data to back it up.

“I believe the arts should be embedded in health care, across the board,” Fleming told the Washington Post. “Doctors need it, healthcare providers need it. When you bring in people who are doing this work, everybody gets lifted.”

Amjad Ali Khan, an Indian classical sarod player, best known for his clear and fast fingering technique known as ekhara taans, will play two concerts with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as part of the Delta Classical Series on October 19 and 21, at 8 p.m., in Atlanta Symphony Hall.

The orchestra will perform “Samaagam,” a sarod concerto featuring ragas composed by Khan, who will perform with his family of acclaimed sarod artists.

The program opens with Gabriela Lena Frank’s “Elegía Andina,” a piece that mixes strains of Peruvian folk song with contemporary sounds to highlight the composer’s multicultural heritage. The night also includes the suite from Prokofiev’s ballet masterpiece, Romeo and Juliet, led by Russian conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya.

Gaetan Le Divelec, vice president of artistic development with the ASO, was Khan’s manager for many years before coming to Atlanta and was influential in the development of the concerto.

“When I came to Atlanta last year, it was really clear to me that I was joining an institution that was, first of all, adventurous with programming, but also had an interest in fostering diversity and inclusion in classical music,” Le Divelec said. “For me, it became obvious that ‘Samaagam’ would be one of the works that could achieve that.”

A free Visions of India Festival will take place before the Oct. 21 concert from 5-8 p.m., and will feature an artist display by Malika Ghosh Garrett; Henna artist stations; dancing from the Jathiswara School of Dance; a Mandala art station by the Shashikala Foundation; and an interactive instrument booth.

Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová of popular folk-rock duo, The Swell Season, are returning to the Atlanta Symphony Hall to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the movie, Once.

The pair reconvened for the first time in 10 years last March for a limited number of sold-out shows and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is excited to welcome them back for a one-night engagement on Aug. 9, beginning at 8 p.m. The show will feature special guest Lisa O’Neill.

Irglová and Hansard starred in the 2007 film and won the Oscar for Best Original Song with their composition, “Falling Slowly.” In 2009, the duo released the critically acclaimed album Strict Joy before branching out into solo careers. Occasionally, they would appear at each other’s shows, but never did a tour together until last March.

In 2012, Once, the musical debuted on Broadway and went on to be nominated for eleven Tonys, winning eight including Best Musical. It ran for three years on Broadway and is currently still in production as a touring musical.

The Grammy Award-winning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, in its second season under the direction of music director Nathalie Stutzmann, has announced its plans for its 2023-24 season.

The season offers one of the orchestra’s most diverse to date, with artists of great range and gravitas side by side with fresh voices and tremendous variety. For instance, the season will include work by Dvořák, Bruckner, Strauss, Brahms, Verdi and Tchaikovsky.

“The artistic partnership between Nathalie Stutzmann and the musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus is nothing short of transformative,” Jennifer Barlament, executive director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra said. “Around the world and here in Atlanta, critics note Stutzmann’s fresh, searching, intriguing interpretations that allow listeners to hear long-beloved works as though they were world premieres.”

The season opens on Oct. 5, with the debut of French harpist Xavier de Maistre, one of the most prominent harpists in the world, performing a concerto from composer Alexander Mosolov and featuring Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4.

The weekend of Jan. 18, the ASO will celebrate the 200th birthday of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner with a program entitled, “Architect of the Spirit: Bruckner at 200,” featuring the composer’s unfinished Symphony No. 9, with the often-used Te Deum to close the performance, featuring the ASO Chorus.

The following weekend, January 25 and 27, the Bruckner celebration continues, with a performance of his Symphony No. 7, paired with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 22, played by Sunwook Kim, making his ASO debut.

In February, the ASO honors Black History Month with an evening curated by Grammy Award-nominated composer and Atlanta native Carlos Simon, who is known for infusing his work with a powerful social conscience. The Orchestra, along with vocalists Kearstin Piper Brown, soprano and Brian K. Majors, baritone, will be joined by the outstanding glee clubs of HBCU’s Morehouse College and Spelman College, as well as poet and spoken-word performer Marc Bamuthi Joseph.

Maestro Stutzmann and soprano Renée Fleming will present an all-Strauss performance in April of 2024, which will consist of Fleming’s signature Four Last Songs and selections from Der Rosenkavalier and Capriccio.

Also in April, Maria João Pires, widely considered to be one of the greatest pianists of our time, will make her Atlanta debut with her interpretation of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4.

In the Fall of 2023, Russian conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya leads Samaagam, a concerto for orchestra and sarod by master of the sarod himself, Amjad Ali Khan.

In November of 2023, former ASO principal bassoonist Andrew Brady returns with guest conductor Anthony Parnther conducting famous movie soundtrack composer John Williams’s bassoon concerto, The Five Sacred Trees. The program includes a new work from composer Chanda Dancy, and Florence Price’s Symphony No. 3.

There will also be several world premieres. For a full schedule, visit www.aso.org.

World-renowned guitar virtuoso, Joe Satriani has announced that his Earth 2022-Tour 2023 will make a stop at Atlanta Symphony Hall on November 7, 2022. Tickets for Joe Satriani: Earth Tour 2022-2023 are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com.

After being forced to postpone numerous tour dates over the last two years, Joe Satriani is more than ready to get back to live shows and playing for his legions of fans across the world. The U.S. leg of his worldwide tour will start on September 21, 2022 in Riverside, CA and continue through November 19 with a final date in the States in Dallas, TX. Satriani will then head over to Europe for rescheduled shows in early 2023.

Satriani is set to release his 19th studio album, The Elephants of Mars, worldwide on April 8, 2022 via earMusic.

About Joe Satriani

The guitarist challenged himself to create a “new standard” for instrumental guitar albums to be measured against, one which would work from “a new platform of his own design,” as he terms it. “I want to show people that the instrumental guitar album can contain far more complexity of creative elements than I think people are using right now.”Satriani and his touring band, all recording remotely in separate areas of the world during lockdown, answered that challenge in spades. The Elephants of Mars crackles with an exciting new energy, briskly traveling through stylistic roads that feel freshly updated, viewed through new eyes. It’s one that, thanks to the pandemic and no constraints, truly represents the album that Satriani himself hoped he could deliver with his band. “We did everything. We tried the craziest ideas. And we entertained every notion we had about turning something backwards, upside down, seeing what could happen.”

His current band features celebrated drummer Kenny Aronoff (John Fogerty) bassist Bryan Beller (Aristocrats) and keyboardist Rai Thistlethwayte (Thirsty Merc) with Joe Satriani on guitar.

Atlanta audiences will get to join in honoring the day the music died this spring.

Grammy Award honoree, Songwriters Hall of Fame member, and BBC Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Don McLean is set to embark on his 2022 American Pie 50th Anniversary Tour with 20 additional cities throughout the United States and Canada. On Friday, May 13, 2022, the tour will make a stop by Atlanta Symphony Hall. As of this morning, tickets are now on sale and available for purchase.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic songs and album ever, this year, McLean will entertain fans across the continent throughout nearly 30 cities from Honolulu to Toronto and everything in between.

“After spending the past 18 months at home, I am thrilled to be getting back on the road with my band,” says Don McLean. “2022 marks the 50th anniversary from when American Pie landed at the #1 spot on the Billboard chart and we will be celebrating on tour all year long. We will be performing all the songs from the American Pie album plus many of the other hits that fans will be expecting to hear.”

About "American Pie"

As tragic as the backstory behind the eight-and-a-half-minute ballad “American Pie” is with the much too early death of the new rock’n’roll-hope Buddy Holly, the 1971 track is also legendary. Alongside songs by other icons such as Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Woody Guthrie, and Aretha Franklin, McLean’s composition was also voted “Song of the 20th Century." Handwritten lyrics to the song were auctioned off for more than $1.2 million in 2015, and the composition was added to the Library Of Congress National Recording Registry two years later. Here, you’ll only find a few selected evergreens, such as “Somewhere Over The Rainbow."

Over the years, the song has been covered again and again by music icons like Madonna and Garth Brooks. Rapper Drake repeatedly sampled McLean tunes and hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur also cited him as an important influence.

About Don McLean

It's worth remembering that the 76-year-old composer has written and sung numerous other melodic and harmonic successes in his decades-long career with "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)," "Castles in the Air," "And I Love You So," and "Cryin’,'' all of which will be heard and reveled in along with newer pieces on the upcoming tour. Accordingly, the complete discography of the legendary and still active singer/songwriter is also significant. Among other things, Don McLean has a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and was inducted into the National Academy of Popular Music Songwriters’ Hall Of Fame in 2004.

And he never gets tired of writing new songs and new stories. In 2018, the sound senior released his 19th studio album, ‘Botanical Gardens’ which received rave reviews. Songs from it subsequently proved themselves live and will maybe even find their way into the setlist next year, alongside “American Pie” and all the other feats from this decades-spanning and unparalleled composition and performance career.
