The Atlanta Opera announced on Friday the postponement of its May 2020 productions: Madama Butterfly and Glory Denied.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Madama Butterflyhas been rescheduled to November 12, 14, and 17 and will be presented as part of a festival of two works by Giacomo Puccini.
The other work to be presented in what The Atlanta Opera is calling the "Puccini Festival" is La bohème, which is the original 2020-21 season-opening production. It will be staged on its originally scheduled dates November 7-15.
The Opera is slightly reducing the staging of Madama Butterfly in order to accommodate the simultaneous production of La bohème. Both productions will be held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.
“Thinking creatively to keep our commitment to our audiences during this time is so important,” said Tomer Zvulun, Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. General & Artistic Director of the company. “The new Atlanta Opera Puccini Festival allows us to build anticipation of something greater than the sum of its original parts,” he added.
Glory Denied's postponement dates are still to be determined.
"During this difficult time, we remain dedicated to our mission now more than ever," continued Zvulun. "Time will tell what the fall brings for our community, but right now we feel fortunate to be in this position, and we are planning these performances with hope and optimism."
Ticketholders for both productions will be contacted individually.

In times of uncertainty, confusion, and sadness, the people of the world always seem to come together and create beacons for hope.
Beacons come in many different forms, especially in today's hyper-digital world. From inspirational quotes to positive hashtags, from happy stories to beautiful videos.
Our world has once again been thrust into a time of uncertainty and confusion, just as it was on June 12, 2016.
On that day almost four years ago, one of the U.S.'s worst mass shootings in history took place at Orlando's Pulse nightclub. A gunman killed 49 people and wounded 53 others.

The Buzz on The Brothers Size
"In the sweltering heat of the Louisiana Bayou, Ogun Size tenuously reunites with his brother Oshoosi, who has recently been released from prison. When Oshoosi’s charismatic former cellmate Elegba arrives, the two brothers find themselves on a collision course with fate in this unflinching and tender exploration of the complex bonds of brotherhood. From the Academy Award-winning writer of Moonlight, The Brothers Size weaves together poetry, music and mythology to magnify the struggle for freedom and the need to belong somewhere."
