Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB Media) launches GPB Encore – a new monthly magazine distributed to GPB Donors in partnership with Encore Atlanta

The premiere issue of GPB Encore debuts July 1.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ATLANTA, GA (May 21, 2020) – Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) is launching a new monthly magazine on July 1 titled, GPB Encore. The new publication will be distributed via mail to GPB donors in partnership with Encore Atlanta, owned/published by Brantley Manderson. Encore Atlanta is the voice of the arts in the southeast’s largest city: Atlanta. GPB is the statewide PBS and NPR network for Georgia. It connects millions of
Georgians every day through television, radio, digital initiatives, and innovative educational programming.

The July premiere issue will feature the cover story American Experience: The Vote, a new four-hour, two-part documentary series that tells the dramatic story of the epic and surprisingly unfamiliar crusade waged by American women for the right to vote and political power. Additional July programming includes the annual, ever-popular A Capitol Fourth, that will air on our nation’s 244th birthday, July 4 at 8:00 p.m. and will celebrate 40 spectacular years on air, with an all-star musical extravaganza with performances from top artists, iconic moments from the concert's 40-year history, a salute to our military heroes of every generation and a special tribute to those on the front lines in the fight against the coronavirus (COVID-19). Two-time Emmy Award-nominated actor and producer John Stamos will be back to host along with the National Symphony Orchestra.

Monthly issues of GPB Encore will feature a wide range of influential television and radio highlights that GPB has become well-known for across Atlanta viewership such as; dramas, education, nature, history, antiques, documentaries, and much more, such as PBS Kids. PBS Kids is available to over 97 percent of U.S. households and provides kids access to what may be their only source of educational TV. GPB is considered the largest stage, classroom, and window to the world — in the current climate, with more of the station’s audience keeping close to home, this is an incredible, affordable benefit for adults and families with children. GPB Encore will feature a monthly guide about educational content that will help prepare millions of children in our state for great success and enhance their interest in the areas of science, math, language, and the arts.

Previously, GPB was producing a bi-monthly newsletter that was mailed to its donors, and many of them expressed the desire for expanded information and more frequent programming updates.

“It is GPB’s mission to educate, inform, and entertain our audiences, and our donors play a key role in making that possible,” said Georgia Public Broadcasting President and CEO Teya Ryan. “Our partnership with Brantley Manderson, the publisher of Encore Atlanta, allows us to strengthen our communication with donors and raise awareness of the many ways to take advantage of GPB’s offerings and the impact of their loyal support. We are excited to begin this new venture.”

GPB will craft the editorial and program design each month, while Encore Atlanta will sell advertising for the new publication.

Encore Atlanta Owner/Publisher, Brantley Manderson shared, “Encore Atlanta is thrilled to have been chosen to partner with GPB in this endeavor, and we view this opportunity as the perfect brand alignment. There are numerous similarities between the GPB audience and donors and our audience that attend the symphony, opera, ballet and theatre where Encore Atlanta is distributed - a natural fit. My team looks forward to growing our reach in Atlanta and around our state with GPB Encore. This partnership affords us the ability to deliver the incredible content that GPB produces that reflects our region’s culture and community-minded Georgians.”

In a special broadcast with Georgia Public Broadcasting last Thursday evening, the ArtsBridge Foundation announced the winners of the 12th Annual Georgia High School Theatre Awards during "Shuler Awards 2020," a special pre-recorded, co-production that aired statewide.

The complete broadcast is available on-demand, for those who missed the winner presentations and scholarship announcements, at www.GPB.org/Shuler-2020.

The Shuler Hensley Awards–as they are are formally known–were created to recognize the best of the state's high school musical theatre students and schools. They are named for the Atlanta-born star who has performed on stage and on screen.

This year's award winners span 14 public and private schools from 11 counties across the state. The initial pool of nominees spanned 30 schools from 15 counties.

“ArtsBridge Foundation congratulates this year’s Shuler Award winners from across Georgia,” said Jennifer Dobbs, executive director of ArtsBridge Foundation. “We wish current events made it possible for all 75 schools to complete their performances for competition, and we appreciate everyone’s support in honoring the hard work of nearly 10,000 students in this year’s Shuler Awards.”

The award ceremony, which is usually held in-person, was moved online due to the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic also caused some schools to not be able to execute their productions, resulting in the loss of eligibility.

“We acknowledge with regret that an array of circumstances – mostly timing of cancelled performances from March 12 through March 15– caused a handful of schools to sadly lose their eligibility to compete,” Dobbs added. “Though they were regrettably out of this year’s competition, in April we announced these eight schools will receive an automatic entry into the 2021 Shuler Awards competition given their students’ demonstrated perseverance and good sportspersonship in times of incredible change.”

The invitation for an automatic entry guarantees the eight schools will have a place among the 2020-2021 Shuler Awards competitors, allowing them to forgo an application process that usually requires a formal online entry on a designated date each August.

It seems Broadway will remain dark indefinitely as New York City continues its battle against coronavirus.

While many states, including our home state of Georgia, are relaxing stay-at-home orders and "restarting" their economies, New York remains a hot bed for COVID-19. As such, the Broadway League has confirmed that productions will now offer refunds and exchanges for performances through September 6 as Broadway remains shutdown over summer.

The unprecedented shutdown began March 12, when productions were given the order to close through April 12. That date was then extended to June 7.

An exact return date has yet to be determined.

“While all Broadway shows would love to resume performances as soon as possible, we need to ensure the health and well-being of everyone who comes to the theatre—behind the curtain and in front of it—before shows can return. The Broadway League’s membership is working in cooperation with the theatrical unions, government officials, and health experts to determine the safest ways to restart our industry,” said Broadway League President Charlotte St. Martin. “Throughout this challenging time, we have been in close communication with Governor Cuomo’s office and are grateful for his support and leadership as we work together to bring back this vital part of New York City's economy—and spirit.”

In a time when many businesses have shuttered their doors or are open with limited service, The Atlanta Opera has found a way to continue to make an impact.

With the rest of its 2019-2020 season cancelled (or postponed), the opera has evolved its operations to assimilate itself with our new normal.

Instead of halting operations completely, the organization has found a way to keep its performers and other employees active through song and sewing.

Singing Telegrams

Members of the The Atlanta Opera Chorus and The Atlanta Opera Studio are recording "Singing Telegrams" for locals in senior living facilities, health care workers, hospital patients, and anyone in need of emotional support during this trying time.

There are two options available to those wishing to send a telegram on The Atlanta Opera website, including a "Singing Telegram" or "Personalized Singing Telegram". (More details here.)

According to CNN, Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun says once the opera stopped production on shows, they started focusing on how they could help the community.

"A lot of people right now are lonely or isolated, and not able to connect with the ones they love," Zvulun said. "We were trying to figure out a way to take our unique skills and transpose them, translate them into something that would be meaningful."

Sewing solutions

The opera's costume shop has partnered with Grady Hospital to produce masks and hospital gowns for health care staff full-time. The masks are designed to be worn over N95 masks to help prolong their usability.

The costume shop has produced approximately 4,000 masks to date and completes 200 gowns per week.

Costume Director Joanna Schmink says the switch has been an adjustment, going from detailed costumes to simple, straightforward designs, but the benefit is immeasurable.

"We're giving, which is also giving back to us, because it's helping us know that we're actually making an impact to the people on the front lines who need the help the most."
