he Suzi Bass Awards will celebrate its 20th anniversary on November 13, honoring outstanding work in Atlanta’s live theatre and the artists who create it. 

Award winners will be announced at a party at Decatur’s DeKalb History Center (101 E Court Square) with a majority of Atlanta’s theatre community and industry artists in attendance.  

This season, the Suzi Bass Awards volunteer judges chose nominees and recipients in 29 categories. 17 theatres and 34 productions are represented in the nominees. 

Alliance Theatre leads with 30 noms, followed by Actor’s Express with 26. Other theatres receiving nominations include Center for Puppetry Arts (7); Atlanta Shakespeare Company (5); Atlanta Lyric Theatre (19); Synchronicity Theatre (5); Aurora Theatre (17);  True Colors Theatre Company (5); Horizon Theatre Company (10);  7 Stages (4); Oglethorpe Theatre (10); Out of Hand Theater (2); Georgia Ensemble Theatre (9); Dad’s Garage (1); Jennie T. Anderson Theatre (9);  Dominion Entertainment (1); and Theatrical Outfit (9).

For musicals, Alliance Theatre’s Water for Elephants led with 15 nominations, followed by Atlanta Lyric Theatre’s Guys and Dolls and Actor’s Express’ Urinetown with 10 apiece.

Additionally, the Suzi Bass Awards will honor the winner of the Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award, which recognizes Atlanta’s talented local playwrights through special notice of a recently produced play; and the Volunteer of the Year Award, which recognizes an individual or group with long-time volunteer contributions to a particular theatre. Both will be announced closer to the event.
