The Atlanta premiere of the 2008 Broadway musical Passing Strange will be staged at Theatrical Outfit Sept. 27-Oct. 22.

The musical won the Tony Award for Best Book and took home three Drama Desk wins, including Best Musical. Passing Strange’s lyrics and book are by Stew with music and orchestrations by Heidi Rodewald and Stew.

The comedy-drama rock musical follows a young African American’s journey of self-discovery as an artist, while combining strong existentialist and meta-fictional elements. Told through a narrator, the show introduces the audience to “Youth” who discovers his musical calling and sets off for Europe, leaving behind his mother and comfortable suburban life.

Bursting with energizing punk, blues, gospel, and jazz music, Passing Strange radiates with humor and heart.

The show is directed and choreographed by Thomas W. Jones II, with S. Renee Clark serving as music director. Christian Magby, Brad Raymond, India Tyree and Candy McLella star.
