The Balzer Theater at Herren's will bring a mystery thriller from a modern playwright to Atlanta this spring.

Theatrical Outfit continues its return to the stage with an explosive work by acclaimed playwright Ike Holter – The Wolf at the End of the Block. Filled with grit and suspense, this new thriller will run at Balzer Theater at Herren’s in the heart of Downtown Atlanta from March 30 – April 24, 2022.

In the Words of Theatrical Outfit's Matt Torney

“Ike describes the play as a ‘neo-noir,’ and he masterfully captures the feeling of threat and imminent violence as the events in the play spiral out of control,” says Torney. “As he unpacks the complex politics that surround the attack, he also places the characters in a shifting moral landscape where the difference between right and wrong becomes unclear. To me, this ambiguity is both startling and exhilarating, and offers a powerful counterpoint to the certainty we see in much of our politics today.”

-Artistic Director Matt Torney

About The Wolf at the End of the Block

Have you ever entered a world where nothing is as it seems? Abe, a resident of the Rightlynd neighborhood of Chicago, seeks justice after a mysterious, late-night attack at a boarded-up bar. In the next 48 hours, the neighborhood digs deep into escalating mystery, working against time to separate fact from fiction. But as the clock ticks down, the media gets involved, and what began as a simple mystery quickly twists into a personal, pointed and political thriller. A modern-day neo-noir, The Wolf at the End of the Block is “A Modern Masterpiece” (New City).

About The Wolf at the End of the Block Cast

It will star some of the best of ATL theatre – Anthony S. Goolsby (East Texas Hotlinks at True Colors Theatre), Mark Kincaid (Dividing the Estate at TO), Matt Mercurio (The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity at Theater Emory), Erika Miranda (The Wickhams: Christmas at Pemberley at TO), and Maria Rodriguez-Sager (Our Town & The Laramie Project at TO).

Wonderland: Alice’s Rock & Roll Adventure at Synchronicity Theatre

Luckie Street is abuzz once more with a new play from Theatrical Outfit.

As Encore Atlanta previously reported, Theatrical Outfit has returned to the stage with its first live production in nearly 18 months – An Iliad by Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare (Based On Homer’s The Iliad, translated by Robert Fagles). Starring Suzi Bass Award-winner Lee Osorio and renowned musician Deisha Oliver, audiences will be taken on a fantastical journey nearly 3,000 years in the making. An Iliad will run at Balzer Theater at Herren’s in the heart of Downtown Atlanta until October 10, 2021.

Take a look at these photos from the show, featuring Lee Osorio!

In the words of An Iliad director and TO Artistic Director Matt Torney

“When looking for a play to reopen the theatre to live audiences after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down, we wanted to tell a story that resonated with the scale of what we have all lived through, and to celebrate the storytelling power of live theatre. By going back in time to an ancient story, and exploring it again in a modern context, An Iliad connects the past year to the broad sweep of history, and to common themes of humanity, chaos, and rebirth.”

About An Iliad

Has anything really changed since the Trojan War? Visionary creators Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare have reimagined Homer’s tragic poem with dazzling theatricality and dark humor. As we emerge from a global pandemic, return to the theater for this sweeping account of humanity’s unshakable attraction to war and the heroes that rise and fall in times of chaos.

Designers

Torney leads a group of Atlanta designers that includes Scenic Design by Lizz Horvath, Costume Design by Alan Yeong, Lighting Design by Ben Rawson, Co-Sound Design & Original Composition by Mikaela Fraser & Rashaad Pierre, Original Composition by Deisha Oliver, and Properties Design by Nick Battaglia.

While the theatre community has endured a lot of changes, Theatrical Outfit has had a particularly surprising year.

When you-know-what hit last spring, longtime Artistic Director Tom Key was on the home stretch of his retirement with plans for Matt Torney to pick up the torch. Torney had about enough time to announce plans for his debut season before it became clear execution of any of those plans would be challenging, if not impossible.

In regrouping for a new 2020/21 season, the team adapted by producing some digital programming in the fall and even hired a new associate artistic director at the beginning of 2021. So as a culmination of these changes, the theatre has just announced a fully reworked digital spring season, accessible to patrons everywhere.

From Theatrical Outfit

“I am thrilled with the response we have gotten for our digital programming so far, and am excited to share these exceptional plays with Atlanta audiences this Spring."

"When putting this season together, we challenged ourselves to look for plays that both engaged directly with the crucial questions of 2021 and the COVID recovery and also allowed our audience escape into new worlds and explore ideas in fresh and exciting ways. The three plays also create a path towards reopening this fall, especially the live stream of Fires in the Mirror which will feel as close to live theatre as you can get at home!”

-Matt Torney, Theatrical Outfit Artistic Director

Behind the name

This year’s festival is named in honor of Graham Martin, a longtime trustee, advocate, and friend of TO who passed away in October of 2020. Martin served as TO’s Board Chair for 5 years and was instrumental in the creation of TO’s home at the Balzer Theater at Herren's, whose rehearsal hall bears his name. Gifts given in his memory provided funding for this year’s Unexpected Play Festival.

From the creators

“The Unexpected Festival is an incredible opportunity for local artists and WTP members, and working with TO is a dream. We love this partnership. WTP is looking forward to seeing what these playwrights and their amazing teams produce in January. We hope you'll join us and share your response after the readings!” -Amber Bradshaw, WTP Managing Artistic Director

"We are thrilled to be partnering with WTP on another new play festival. Atlanta is such a hotbed of talent and creativity, and one of the great joys of my first season at Theatrical Outfit has been getting to know the remarkable writers who call Atlanta home.  We want to offer a home for these playwrights, where they can develop their work with amazing artists and a supportive audience, and to showcase the extraordinary talent our great city has offer." - Matt Torney, TO Artistic Director

I'm excited to play a role in helping Theatrical Outfit become an incubator for new work in the Southeast."

About Addae Moon

Addae has served as a resident dramaturg with Working Title Playwright’s Ethel Woolson Lab. His recent immersive co-collaborations include Frankenstein’s Ball (2019/2020) and Frankenstein’s Funeral (2019) both with Found Stages.

As the former Literary Manager at Horizon Theatre Company, he served as dramaturg on the early development projects for Marcus Gardley, Lauren Gunderson, Tanya Barfield and Janece Shaffer. Addae received his BA in Theatre Arts from Clark Atlanta University and an MFA in Playwriting from the Professional Playwright’s Program at Ohio University. It will include three stages: commissioning brand new plays, developing scripts through workshops and readings, and most importantly, producing world premiere productions. Through these avenues, Theatrical Outfit is investing in powerful new voices and building national partnerships that will enrich the theatre and our community. Slated for Fall 2020.

The Welcome Table

A special one-night event to benefit organizations that serve the downtown homeless community

The Welcome Table will raise awareness of the most vulnerable among us, shining a light on how the homeless community has been impacted by COVID while raising funds to support the wonderful organizations working to mitigate that impact.
