About Into the Woods

Authors James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone’s favorite storybook characters and bring them together for this timeless, modern classic. With a Tony Award-winning book and score, Into the Woods is both enchanting and touching, as it tells the magical tale of a Baker and his wife, who in their quest to have a child make a bargain with a vengeful witch. Their journey into the woods brings them in contact with a host of fairytale characters including Cinderella, Jack, Rapunzel, a wolf, a giant, and even a handsome prince, or two. Ultimately, the characters are forced to experience the unintended consequences of their actions. One of Broadway legend Sondheim’s most popular works, Into the Woods is a masterful, musical journey for audiences of all ages.

Audiences at the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival’s new Broadway film, Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles were in for a treat last week when they were surprised with a live performance.

Just before a screening of the new Fiddler on the Roof documentary, Tony Award-winner Shuler Hensley performed the iconic, “If I Were a Rich Man” in full costume. This is not the first time the Atlanta native has donned the Jewish patriarch’s regalia, having also performed the song as part of the revue The Prince of Broadway in its 2015 world premiere production.

Check out pics from the performance below!

Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles
The documentary by Max Lewkowicz tells the origin story behind one of Broadway's most beloved musicals, Fiddler on The Roof, and its creative roots in early 1960s New York, when "tradition" was on the wane as gender roles, sexuality, race relations and religion were evolving. It features interviews with Fiddler lyricist Sheldon Harnick, the late producer Hal Prince, original cast member Austin Pendleton, Broadway figures Lin-Manuel Miranda, Joel Grey, Chaim Topol, and Harvey Fierstein, and authors Fran Lebowitz, Calvin Trillin, and Nathan Englander.
