Water for Elephants, which made its world premiere on the Alliance Theatre’s Coca-Cola Stage last summer, will open on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre March 21.
This marks the tenth Alliance-developed show to make it to the Broadway stage. Others include The Prom, Bring It On, Tuck Everlasting, Sister Act, Come Fly Away, The Color Purple and Disney’s Aida.
Based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Sara Gruen, the musical has a book by three-time Tony Award nominee Rick Elice, a score by the acclaimed PigPen Theatre Co., and is directed by Tony Award nominee Jessica Stone.
The musical toplines The Flash star Grant Gustin making his Broadway debut, as well as theatre veterans Isabelle McCalla, Gregg Edelman and Paul Alexander Nolan.
Water for Elephants tells the story of a young man who jumps on a moving train, unsure of where the trip will take him, and finds a new home with the remarkable crew of a traveling circus. Told through the eyes of his older self, his adventure becomes a poignant reminder that if you choose the ride, life can begin again at any age.
