NINA SIMONE (1933-2003) was known as the “high priestess of soul.” Nina Simone: Four Women, a play with music at True Colors Theatre Company, follows Simone’s shift from singer to activist, a transformation prompted in part by the 1963 bombing of Birmingham’s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, which killed four young girls. The drama uses the Simone song “Four Women” as a framework, and gives voices to four stereotypical characters. It includes the civil rights anthems “Mississippi Goddam,” “Go Limp” and “Young, Gifted and Black.” For age 15 and up (adult language). True Colors performs at the Southwest Arts Center, 915 New Hope Road SW.
