blues posterJoin the Alliance Theatre for this 20th anniversary staging of Pearl Cleage’s Blues for an Alabama Sky, a timeless look at hopeful dreams in hopeless days during the twilight of the Harlem Renaissance. Disease and poverty overshadow the creative euphoria that fueled a surge of African-American artists, writers and luminaries, and this story, with a rich cast of characters, follows their scramble to survive and make sense of their overlapping personalities, politics and love. The Alliance presented the world premiere of Blues in 1995. “What Cleage points out, with candor and wit,” wrote one critic, “is the necessity for dreams, no matter how improbable. An extraordinary achievement, written with genuine empathy.” Our tickets are for performances beginning April 15.
