Atlanta’s artistic mojo will be on major display this month as downtown forms the backdrop for a weeklong, wide-ranging contemporary art series. Elevate 2012 will transform the city’s buildings, parks, sidewalks and streets, amping up Atlanta’s cultural vibe with installations both temporary and permanent, walking tours, a gala and auction, a mural-painting extravaganza with nationally renowned graffiti artists, and a street festival.

Sponsored by the city’s Office of Cultural Affairs, the Oct. 19-27 series is a chance to tap into the wealth of inspiration and creativity as Atlanta itself becomes an artistic canvas. All activities are free and open to the public. Highlights:

  • “Banho De Luz,” a mixed-media installation and interactive video event; corner of Peachtree and Baker streets. Unveiling Oct. 19 (8-11 p.m.); also Oct. 25 (8-11 p.m.).
  • 5K Run/Walk Artwork Tour, featuring large-scale sculptures and prints; beginning and ending at Trinity House, 21 Bell St. Oct. 20 (noon-2 p.m.).
