Aurora Theatre is offering a chance for couples to celebrate the day of love by snuggling up for an evening of romantic tunes.

This Valentine’s Day, the award-winning theatre sets the mood for romance at the outdoor Biergarten at Ironshield Brewing – complete with cozy fire pits and musical performances. Aurora Theatre Co-Founder and Associate Producer Ann-Carol Pence has teamed up with the dynamic India Tyree to put together an evening of love songs, ranging in genre and era – like a mixtape – to create the perfect in-person date night.

Pence and Tyree will be joined onstage by Ashley Prince, Brandin Jay, and Lamont J. Hill and accompanied by Mark Biering and Brian Smith.

From Aurora Theatre

“Although we have cautiously navigated this past year, we still search for ways we can safely gather and create a live show. That’s what sets us apart,” said Ann-Carol Pence, Co-Founder and Associate Producer of Aurora Theatre. “This time, we’ve teamed up with India Tyree to help produce. India has been a vocal sensation since I met her in 2015, and she continues to be one of the most dynamic and driven artists in the region. Audiences are going to love this show!”

The edibles

Ironshield Brewing will have craft beers available for purchase and will allow outside food during the event. Local restaurant Cosmo’s Pizza on Crogan is offering free delivery to the venue with a two-person special that includes a garden salad, heart-shaped pizza and cannoli for $22. Call 770-338-9274 to place an order.

The details

Located at 457 N Chestnut St, Ironshield Brewing will set the stage for Love Mix: A Valentine’s Cabaret* on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. Tickets are currently on sale, starting at $25 for singles and $45 for couples and may be purchased online here.

Behind the name

This year’s festival is named in honor of Graham Martin, a longtime trustee, advocate, and friend of TO who passed away in October of 2020. Martin served as TO’s Board Chair for 5 years and was instrumental in the creation of TO’s home at the Balzer Theater at Herren's, whose rehearsal hall bears his name. Gifts given in his memory provided funding for this year’s Unexpected Play Festival.

From the creators

“The Unexpected Festival is an incredible opportunity for local artists and WTP members, and working with TO is a dream. We love this partnership. WTP is looking forward to seeing what these playwrights and their amazing teams produce in January. We hope you'll join us and share your response after the readings!” -Amber Bradshaw, WTP Managing Artistic Director

"We are thrilled to be partnering with WTP on another new play festival. Atlanta is such a hotbed of talent and creativity, and one of the great joys of my first season at Theatrical Outfit has been getting to know the remarkable writers who call Atlanta home.  We want to offer a home for these playwrights, where they can develop their work with amazing artists and a supportive audience, and to showcase the extraordinary talent our great city has offer." - Matt Torney, TO Artistic Director

George Bailey is back in town for the Christmas season and beyond.

Quick facts

The Aurora Theatre is streaming its third annual This Wonderful Life now through January 1. As the name would suggest, this is an adaptation of It's a Wonderful Life, but the twist is that it's performed by one storyteller. The multi-talented Jeremy Aggers reprises the role(s) for which he received the 2019 Suzi Bass Award, starring as everyone from little Zuzu to mean old Mr. Potter.

Sneak peek

About This Wonderful Life

This hilariously-touching stage adaptation of one of the most popular and heartwarming films ever made stars Atlanta’s own Jeremy Aggers (Singles in Agriculture, Hands on a Hardbody). Mr. Aggers inhabits all of the wonderful characters from Clarence, Mr. Potter, Uncle Billy, Mary, Mr. Gower, yes even Zuzu, as well as the undeniably iconic George Bailey, who learns that it takes a lot more than money to be the richest man in town. Written by Steve Murray and conceived by Mark Setlock, Justin Anderson returns to direct.

About Jeremy Aggers

Jeremy Aggers is an actor, audiobook narrator, and musician based in Atlanta. This is Jeremy’s fourth show at Aurora. His last role here, as Joel in Singles In Agriculture, was one of his favorites of his career. Some of his other favorite roles include Reese in Edward Foote (Alliance Theatre), Mr. Tumnus in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (Alliance Theatre), Buddy in The Buddy Holly Story (Georgia Ensemble), and Donald Mackenzie in Astoria at Portland Center Stage. Look for his audiobooks on the magical internet.

With spooky season just barely behind us, a spider-entitled musical is ready to stream this weekend. But it has little to do with spiders and spooks.

Quick facts

Lock Willow Productions will stream the romantic and heartwarming Daddy Long Legs in partnership with the Pumphouse Players in Cartersville November 6-15. All proceeds will benefit The Pumphouse Players. From writers Paul Gordon and John Caird, the original production of this musical had its run Off-Broadway in 2015 and famously became the first Off-Broadway musical to stream a live performance.

About Daddy Long Legs

Set in the early 1900s in New England, Daddy Long Legs is the vivid account of a young orphan as she blossoms into a beautiful, intelligent and vivacious woman. An anonymous benefactor gives Jerusha Abbott an opportunity to attend college, requiring that she write to him monthly, even though he says he will not respond. Her letters to him paint a moving portrait of her former life in the orphanage, and the development of her mind and spirit.

The arts are alive in Atlanta, and Encore Atlanta has your guide to what shows will go on through the end of the year. While most companies are streaming performances, there are multiple opportunities to soak in theatre in Atlanta in 2020.

Miss your connection to the stage? (Of course--we do, too.)

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of Encore Monthly, a national publication that shares the stories of the stage, the wings, and the aisles of the national theatre scene.

Learn more about the magazine and its premiere edition, opening curtains on a new era in January 2021.

Alliance Theatre

Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience (Virtual)

Dates: Oct. 23 to Nov. 3

This all-ages musical rescheduled its March 2020 production and pivoted to a virtual rock experience, which was recorded before the Alliance Theatre paused all shows. Wilbur, the beloved, bedazzled mole rat in the titular role, brings Mo Willems’ children’s series to life in an amped up streaming event.

A Very Terry Christmas

Dates: Nov. 27 to Dec. 31

In this love letter to Atlanta, Broadway icon Terry Burrell’s prerecorded holiday show promises to bring classic songs and warm greetings via streaming. Join in as Terry shows you her favorite destinations in Atlanta, sings festive jingles, shares personal stories and entertains your family from the comfort of your home.

A Christmas Carol: The Live Radio Play (Drive-in)

Dates: Dec. 4 to Dec. 23

See the classic Dickens tale come to life from the comfort of your car. The drive-in performances of A Christmas Carol sound even better as foley artists dramatize jingle bells, clanking chains and Victorian life in the style of radio plays, and the interactive elements of the show will keep the whole car entertained. Bring your own decorations!

Atlanta Ballet

The Nutcracker (virtual and drive-in)

The Atlanta Ballet’s critically acclaimed rendition of The Nutcracker was going to have a pivotal transition to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, but, like many things in the world of theatre in Atlanta in 2020, the changes were even greater than anticipated. While it won’t be live this year, it can still be a part of your seasonal traditions.

The Atlanta Ballet filmed a performance last year at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the forethought makes it unlike most of the virtual shows available in 2020.  Viewers who want to watch at home can purchase a viewing link from the Ballet. Each link you purchase is live for 72 hours, and links will be available Nov. 17 to Dec. 27 on the company's site.

Want to see sugar plum fairies dance across the big screen? The drive-in experience might be the best way to kick off your holiday celebrations.

For five nights in December, you can park your family and friends into a spot at the drive-in to see the virtual experience, peruse the holiday marketplace, and pick up themed souvenir and snack packages. Purchase Nutcracker tickets for your car here.

The Atlanta Opera

Molly Blank Big Tent Series (Drive-in)

Dates: Oct. 22 to Nov. 15

The venue is ready, and the Atlanta Opera’s Big Tent Series is prepping for productions of Pagliacci, The Kaiser of Atlantis and some special one-night performances, all taking place under a dramatic tented stage.

The Opera worked with Oglethorpe University to set up dozens of pods for safe event viewing, and this is one of the best ways to witness how innovative Atlanta theatre has become throughout COVID-19.

Our pro tip? Upgrade your package so that a bottle of wine is waiting for you in your socially distant pod.

All remaining performances of the 2020 season have been pushed to the 2021-2022 season, and you can find more information on the Opera’s website.

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

Pull in and tailgate while the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra rocks on during the Live From the Drive-In concert series. Set against the Ameris Bank Amphitheatre, the Symphony takes on a new artist for each show that it plays, kicking off with a Led Zeppelin tribute (Oct. 19).

Each car is limited to four people, and the passenger side space is designated for socially distant tailgating.

Fox Theatre

"The Women of Broadway" streaming experience brings Patti Lupone (Oct. 24), Laura Benanti (Nov. 14) and Vanessa Williams (Dec. 5) into your home.

Tickets for each stream start at $30, and on-demand viewing is available for 72 hours after the event.

Multi-talented theatre professional Terry Burrell brings us Backstage and Other Stories, an original show based on her vast career which has taken her here, there, and everywhere. Accompanied on the piano by S. Renee Clark, the performance will be streamed through October 25.

Backstage and Other Stories is the first in Synchronicity Theatre's 4x4 Series, featuring four shows by four women. Click here to read more about the series on Encore Atlanta, the next of which will stream next week.

In the words of Synchronicity Theatre

"After a lifetime on Broadway and regional stages, Terry Burrell spills the tea in a joyful, sassy, musical joint, accompanied by S. Renee Clark on the keys. These are two local legends you won’t want to miss!"

About Terry Burrell

Terry's extensive Broadway credits include The Threepenny Opera, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Into The Woods, and more. She also starred in the first London production of Showboat as Julie. In regional theatre, Terry was nominated for the Helen Hayes Best Actress in a Musical award for her portrayal of Queenie in Duke Ellington’s Queenie Pie.

In addition, Terry is a seasoned cabaret artist who’s performed her nightclub act for audiences from Monte Carlo to the Caribbean and for corporate clients like IBM, Avon and The National Grocers Association. Most notably in Atlanta, she brought her one-woman piece, Ethel, a theatrical tribute to Ethel Waters, to the Alliance Theatre in 2016. This holiday season, she will return to the Alliance with A Very Terry Christmas.

In the words of the theatre

“As theatre companies across Atlanta and the nation continue to assess when we can return to live, in-person programming, we wanted to think about different kinds of work that can resonate with our audiences online. We have curated a slate of work that speaks to our current moment in thoughtful and varying ways.”

-Artistic Director Freddie Ashley

New play reading

By Keiko Green
Directed by Donya K. Washington
October 4, 2020 at 7:00 PM

James hasn’t been back to his rural Georgia hometown in over a decade, but reluctantly returns to check in on his father, whose behavior has become worryingly erratic. And since the South has a way of holding onto secrets, he soon stumbles into a life he thought he had left behind as a child. That stench in the air isn’t just his father’s decaying house, but the rotten core of long-buried secrets teeming just under the surface and ready to explode. Hometown Boy boldly tackles race, class and being an outsider in the Deep South.
