Synchronicity Theatre, as part of a co-production with Impact Theatre Atlanta, will stage the world premiere of Kelundra Smith’s The Wash, June 7-30.
The Atlanta Washerwomen’s Strike of 1881, one of the largest interracial labor strikes in the post-Civil War era, is considered a pivotal moment in history. The Wash brings to life this time in an often humorous journey of these brave, strong women who beat the system.
The story tells the untold story of Atlanta’s courageous black laundresses, who weeks before the International Cotton Exposition swept into the city, defied oppression and ignited a movement.
Directed by Brenda Porter, the show stars Kenedi Deal as Jewel, Tanya Freeman as Anna, Nevaina as Jeanie, Makallen Kelley as Christy, Charis Sellick as Mozelle, and Jamila Turner as Thomasine.
In conjunction with the play, Synchronicity Theatre will present Indigo Night at 6:30 p.m. June 19 to celebrate the Juneteenth holiday. Three prominent Black chefs from Atlanta will provide culinary delights before the show.
