Alliance Theatre

September 2024: The Mountaintop

The Mountaintop is a gripping reimagining of events the night before the assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Taking place on April 3, 1968, an exhausted Dr. King retires to his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis after delivering one of his most memorable speeches. When a mysterious young woman named Camae delivers room service, the two engage in humorous conversation that progresses into a soul-searching discussion about their mutual hopes and fears. When Camae reveals a secret, King is forced to confront his destiny and his legacy to his people. “Audacious [and] inventive” (Associated Press), the Olivier Award-winning play offers an intimate and empathetic portrait of one of history’s most consequential leaders told by one of today’s most important writers, Pulitzer Prize winner Katori Hall (The Hot Wing King). Alliance Theatre’s Jennings Hertz Artistic Director Tinashe Kajese-Bolden (The Preacher’s Wife) directs.

The Atlanta Opera

April 2024: Die Walkure

The Ring Cycle, Wagner’s greatest masterpiece, continues with Die Walküre, the second epic installment in the Ring. The daughters of Wotan, ruler of the gods, serve as Valkyries tasked with guiding the souls of fallen warriors to Valhalla. But as scandal erupts, Wotan finds himself at odds with whom he most trusts. Greer Grimsley returns as the definitive Wotan in The Atlanta Opera’s new production of one of opera’s greatest triumphs.

Atlanta Ballet

Nighthawks
Acclaimed Choreographer-in-Residence Claudia Schreier’s groundbreaking ballet to The Jungle (Symphony No. 4) by award-winning jazz musician Wynton Marsalis will take you on a journey through musicality and inventive movement that reflects the complexities, diversity and fast pace of modern city life. From the music and choreography to the art and costumes, city flair will take center stage in this world premiere. Through exclusive artistic collaborations with Atlanta-based muralist Charity Hamidullah and costume designer Abigail Dupree-Polston, Nighthawks will embrace colorful palettes, abstract imagery and cosmopolitan influences, presenting a visual and harmonious narrative steeped in emotion, relationships and life.

Yellow
Brazilian artist Juliano Nunes, one of the world’s most sought-after young choreographers, will set his exhilarating new commission, Yellow, to one of the greatest piano sonatas of all time, Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 29 in B-Flat Major. The adagio tempo of the “Hammerklavier” will set the tone for Nunes’ distinctive, interconnected movement vocabulary, revealing minimal disturbances between the visual and the audible. Taking inspiration from the color yellow, its vibrancy and positivity, Nunes’ new work intertwines and reveals the different genres of his ideas. A classical transition into modern times, Yellow is a piece that reflects the growth, fluidity and continuation of life and relationships, highlighting the more we understand, the more we are able to progress.

June, 2024: Mark Morris Dance Group

An Evening of Dance to the Music of Burt Bacharach. Following the roaring success of his Beatles tribute, Pepperland, MARK MORRIS teams up again with musical collaborator Ethan Iverson for THE LOOK OF LOVE, a wistful and heartfelt homage to the chart-topping songs of Burt Bacharach (“Alfie,” “What the World Needs Now,” “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head,” “The Look of Love,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” and more). A towering figure across decades of Popular music, Bacharach is known for crafting soaring melodies embedded in unique orchestrations influenced by jazz, rock, and Brazilian music — his longtime lyricist Hal David providing unsentimental, often bittersweet lyrics. The combination of these powerhouse creatives allows this original dance work to, like a great melody, evoke an atmosphere and inspire feelings all their own.

This showpiece features original choreography by Morris and new, lush musical arrangements by Iverson, performed live by an ensemble of piano, trumpet, bass, percussion, and vocals by singer, actress, and Broadway star MARCY HARRIELL. A must see for dance and music fans alike, THE LOOK OF LOVE also features lighting design by Nicole Pearce and costume design by Isaac Mizrahi.
