On July 19 and 20, the Atlanta Ballet will unveil a world premiere at Dancers Responding to AIDS’ 14th Annual Fire Island [N.Y.] Dance Festival. Featuring Peng-Yu Chen and Tara Lee, the new piece is an interpretation of Spottiswoods & His Enemies’ song “That’s What I Like” (which is a satirical take on The Sound of Music song “My Favorite Things”).
“The piece is a work in alternatives and juxtapositions, nonverbal conversations, layers of emotions,” says John McFall, Atlanta Ballet’s artistic director. “[It’s] a teaser — delightful, entertaining, fun that exudes the Fire Island spirit of getting away and having fun with friends.”
Dancers Responding to AIDS is a charity organization that seeks to support people living with HIV/AIDS, social services for performing professionals and women’s health programs. Its annual Fire Island Dance Festival has been hailed as “the charity event of the season” by The New York Times.
