It’s baaaaaack! Art Party, the once (and once again) signature multimedia event at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center reappears Oct. 19 after an 11-year absence. The event’s return after more than a decade coincides with the center’s 40th anniversary and will give the Contemporary a chance to show off renovations. Reason enough to party, we think. Art Party details:
TIME/DATE: 7 p.m.-midnight Oct. 19.
LOCATION: 535 Means St. N.W.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Exhibitions by Los Angeles’ Fallen Fruit and Atlanta’s Steven L. Anderson, plus music, film and dance, including pop-up art and foodie fun. Picture yourself strolling the space a few times, wine in hand, and encountering new experiences with each go ’round.
TICKETS: Available online soon. $25 members. $50 in advance; $60 at door.
Longtime Atlanta arts patrons will remember the Contemporary’s beginnings in 1973 as Nexus, a grass-roots artists’ cooperative. The non-collecting center now presents six to 10 exhibitions per year, paying particular attention to artists of note who have not yet had a showing in the Southeast.
The Contemporary closes for renovations June 16; until then you can see their 2 current exhibits. Don’t Tell Anyone But … by Atlanta artist Shara Hughes. Her paintings combine elements of landscape, still life and figuration. In addition to Shara Hughes, the Contemporary is exhibiting Jon Pack & Gary Hustwit’s The Olympic City. Admission is free for members, $8 general, $5 students and senior citizens. Details HERE or at 404.688.1970.
The renovated Contemporary will feature a new lecture hall and event space for education programs and social gatherings; redesigned lobby, reception and restroom areas; a weather-proof covering and new lighting for the outdoor pavilion enabling year-round programs and events; a redesigned resource room with natural light; and energy-efficient HVAC and lighting systems.
