A new documentary relating the journey of five creative teams as they compete for the prestigious Antinori Grand Prize at The Atlanta Opera’s 96-Hour Opera Project, is now available on Georgia Public Broadcasting’s Passport streaming site (gpb.org/passport) and The Atlanta Opera Film Studio streaming site (stream.atlantaopera.org).
The Atlanta Opera’s 96-Hour Project was created as a talent incubator and competition for composers and librettists, inviting creatives who self-identify as under-represented to apply. Once selected, competitors are paired with selected talents to create mini-operas on a presented theme.
The competition is judged by industry leaders, who also act as mentors, as contenders compete for a $10,000 grand prize.
This year, in partnership with Oakland Cemetery and the Atlanta History Center, the competition included entries based on under-told stories of the lives of historic Black Atlantans who are buried at The Oakland Cemetery.
The documentary explores the entire process—from creating to collaborating to performing—all the way up to the awarding of the Antinori Grand Prize.
“This documentary celebrates not only the ethnic diversity of the competing artists who created these stories but also the stories from Atlanta of those unsung heroes, those heroes who are woven into the history of this city that have also been under-represented in this town,” Tomer Zvulun, Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. general and artistic director, said. “It’s here we find our humanity.”
