The Game, a new play by Bekah Brunstetter (Tony-nominated librettist of the Broadway musical The Notebook), will kick off Horizon Theatre’s 40th season.
The heartfelt comedy, directed by Caroline Jane Davis, will be staged at the Inman Park theatre June 28 through July 28.
The story follows Alyssa and Homer, a married couple who have hit a glitch—problems that can be attributed to an engrossing online game that’s wreaking havoc on people everywhere. When Alyssa starts a support group for other women in a similar situation, the game enters a new level where all’s fair in love and war.
Brunstetter was also a writer on NBC’s hit drama, This Is Us. Her play, The Cake, was part of Horizon Theatre’s 2019 season.
“We looked all over the country for plays that we loved by amazing writers whose stories that would matter to our audiences,” said Lisa Adler, Horizon Theatre’s co-artistic/producing director. “We were delighted to find this new, up-to-the-minute comedy by the author of our hit, The Cake. It’s funny, warm and all about re-discovering the spark in your marriage and the power of friends. It’s the perfect summer comedy for fun with friends or partners.”
Jennifer Alice Acker stars as Alyssa and Chris Hecke as Homer, with a cast that also includes Marcie Millard, Shannon Eubanks, Michelle Pokopac and Hope Clayborne.
Horizon Theatre’s 40th season will also feature Wild with Happy, the critically acclaimed musical Amélie, I Carry Your Heart With Me, Laughs in Spanish, Madeline’s Christmas and Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 in January 2025.
