Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre is set to be performed by the Atlanta Opera at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre from April 27 to May 5. And even though there was a late change to one of the cast’s main players, the show will go on.
Christine Goerke will now sing the role of Brünnhilde, taking over from Wendy Bryn Harmer, who made the tough decision to withdraw from the production when she was hit with a viral infection just before the final week of rehearsals began.
Goerke, a leading soprano on international stages, just completed a run in the title role of Puccini’s Turandot at The Metropolitan Opera in mid-April.
Renowned for singing Wagner’s works, Goerke has plenty of experience as Brünnhilde, performing the role at Lyric Opera of Chicago, in the full Ring at the Metropolitan Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, Houston Grand Opera, and the Edinburgh International Festival.
The rest of Die Walküre’s cast remains the same, with the show also starring Greer Grimsley (Wotan), Viktor Antipenko (Siegmund), Laura Wilde (Sieglinde), Raymond Aceto (Hunding) and Gretchen Krupp (Fricka) under conductor Arthur Fagen.
