Synchronicity Theatre will stage a play based on Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. The best-selling fantasy-adventure children’s novel written and illustrated by Grace Lin was inspired by Chinese folklore.
Published in 2009, the book received a 2010 Newbery Honor and the 2010 Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Children’s Literature. The show is scheduled to run Jan. 26-Feb. 18.
Adapted for the stage by Jeannine Coulombe and directed by Justin Anderson, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon tells the story of young Minli, who lives with her parents near Fruitless Mountain, surviving on the meager fare they can produce. Inspired by the rich tales her father tells—as well as magical goldfish—Minli sets out on a quest to find the Old Man of the Moon who, it is said, knows the secret of good fortune.
The 90-minute show incorporates puppets, dance and masks, and is recommended for those five and older.
