As part of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s celebrated Coca-Cola holiday series, a new holiday concert, Sounds of the Season, will play two performances in Symphony Hall—Dec. 23 at 3 p.m., and 8 p.m.
The performances will include a creative melding of classical favorites with swinging holiday tunes, featuring jazz singer Tammy McCann.
“We are always looking for ways to invite new audiences to engage with the ASO,” said Jennifer Barlament, ASO’s executive director. “We know that during the holidays, families are looking for something fun and meaningful to do with the whole family. In Sounds of the Season, we offer a wide variety of music in a fast-moving program, including everything from orchestral favorites like excerpts from The Nutcracker to jazzy takes on favorite holiday tunes. There’s something to delight everyone in the family.”
William R. Langley, associated conductor of the ASO, will lead the orchestra through this family-friendly program. As part of the program, movements from The Nutcracker will be performed by the ASO in an entirely new way—first with Tchaikovsky’s original version right next to Duke Ellington’s big-band arrangements.
Expect McCann to sing such popular carols as “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
“It’s a wonderful idea to have a concert with popular songs that people can walk out humming,” Langley said. “We want this to be a show where everybody can come and bring their kids.”
