As part of its 35th anniversary season, Actor’s Express will stage the world premiere of Kira Rockwell’s play, Oh, To Be Pure Again.
The story takes place during a hot summer at a fundamentalist church camp in Texas, with an idealistic young counselor working to shepherd the campers in the girls’ cabin through a delicate phase of self-discovery, only to be confronted with challenges to her own faith.
The 90-minute drama, directed by Directed by Kate Bergstrom, explores themes such as self-discovery, liberation, rebellion, desire, rage, self-worth, nature and communion. Rockwell did 61 interviews to write the script, and describes her young characters as “crashing into the uneasy tension between obedience and rebellion in a culture that is obsessed with their sexual purity.”
The play stars Alejandra Ruiz as Autumn; Ebony Jerry as Trina; Aliya Kraar as Rachel; Erin North as Jean Ruby; Brandy Bell as Luna; Shannon Murphy as Becca; Andres Figueroa as Adrian; and Brian Kurlander as Rachel’s Dad
