To comfort her, the village storytellers share the tale of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who falls in love with a grand homme. The musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, Anastasia) was nominated for eight 1991 Tony awards, including best musical. It made a Broadway star of LaChanze, who later played the leading role of Celie in the Alliance Theatre-born Broadway musical The Color Purple.
