If you’re going to the Fox Theatre this week for the musical If/Then, or for any other reason coming up, give yourself extra time. At least 30 minutes before show time is recommended. Why? Because the Fox has added metal detectors at its entrances.
The system was auditioned last month at a screening for the Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival and worked so well, it will now be used at all events — theater, concerts, movies, etc.
Metal detectors have been used for some time by professional sports leagues, including the NFL, NBA and NHL. They’ve been less common in the performing arts world.
Patrons arriving for a full-house event will see up to 10 metal detectors in the arcade area leading to the main entrance. Fox officials hope that standing in line and removing cellphones, keys and wallets from pockets and purses, plus moving through the detectors will take no more than seven minutes.
You won’t have to remove shoes, belts, jewelry or watches and nothing has changed on the Fox’s list of prohibited items. It includes firearms, pocketknives, utility tools, aerosol cans, laser pointers and outside food and drink. Find the full list HERE.
