The Alliance Theatre has named some of the cast that will lead its 2016/17 season opener, a world premiere musical comedy directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, whose Aladdin, Book of Mormon and Something Rotten! continue to run on Broadway, but whose Tuck Everlasting lived only briefly.
The Prom, as the new show is titled, is based on an original concept by producer Jack Viertel and described this way: Emma becomes an instant outcast and national headline when her high school cancels the prom rather than let her attend with her girlfriend. Sensing a chance to correct an injustice — and maybe get some good press along the way — a group of fading celebrities takes up the cause and invades Emma’s small Indiana town.
Coming to Atlanta from Broadway, and perhaps making the return trip if all goes well, are Tony Award winners Beth Leavel (The Drowsy Chaperone) and Christopher Sieber (Spamalot, Shrek the Musical) and Tony nominee Brooks Ashmanskas (Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me). Also in the cast is Martin Moran (Titanic) and Atlanta-based actors Courtenay Collins and Clayton Landey. Leavel appeared as Ma Tuck in part of the Atlanta run of Tuck Everlasting.
Nicholaw leads a creative team that includes actor-writer Bob Martin (a Tony winner for The Drowsy Chaperone), Chad Beguelin (Tony-nominated for Aladdin and The Wedding Singer) and Matthew Sklar (a Tony nominee for The Wedding Singer).
The Prom begins previews Aug. 16 and runs through Sept. 25 on the Alliance mainstage. Season tickets are on sale now HERE. Single seats will go on sale closer to opening night.
