What do Coming to Zimbabwe, Zombie Sex and #Moxie have in common? They’re all part of the fifth Atlanta Fringe Festival, a five-day performance extravaganza running June 8-12 with 20 productions at three venues.
Eight Atlanta-area shows are in the lineup, decided by pulling show proposals from a hat. They’ll compete for cash prizes and audience awards with performers from Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Orleans, San Francisco and Seattle.
The first Fringe Festival was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1947, and it remains among the most prestigious. Fringe fests are now held annually in 19 states and the District of Columbia.
This year’s Atlanta shows range from multiple shades of comedy, “dramedy,” cabaret, mind-reading and magic, music/motion installations, spoken word/storytelling, aerial acrobatics and contemporary ballet.
The fest will again air its Fringe Audio podcasts, a network of free audio performances that streams throughout the event. A $100 cash prize goes to the online show that gets the widest audience. Last year’s podcasts had 2,013 listens from 26 countries.
Fringe performances will take place at 7 Stages at 1105 Euclid Ave. N.E.; Montessori in Town at 678 Moreland Ave. N.E.; and the Marianna event space at the Wrecking Bar Brewpub, 292 Moreland Ave. N.E.
Tickets aren’t on sale yet, but prices range from $10 per show to a $99 all-access pass. Six-show and 10-show options also will be available. Every festgoer also needs a $3 Fringe button.
