Atlanta composer Mark Gresham is among 10 artists who have received honorable mentions in violinist Hilary Hahn’s composition contest titled In 27 Pieces. Gresham’s Café Cortadito was among 400 submissions.
Hahn, a Grammy Award-winning American violinist, commissioned 26 short-form pieces for acoustic violin and piano and put out an open call for submissions. The contest is intended to expand the violin repertoire, engage new fans, and break down barriers between artists and audiences.
Hahn will premiere the winning piece, The Angry Birds of Kauai by Hawaii composer Jeff Myers, Gresham’s work and the other honorable mentions by the end of 2015.
“It’s a short piece of music, but it’s a real big deal,” says Gresham. “It’s a big deal for any composer to have someone like that perform a piece.”
