No one would describe Salvador Dali as a shy man, but the Dali exhibit at the High Museum of Art does a fantastic job of highlighting some little-known aspects of his life and work. For instance, did you know that he ranked himself and his contemporaries against art’s great masters? The hilarious handwritten graph is on display by some of his early Surrealist works. Have you ever seen the jewelry he created? You’ll not only see these rare art sculptures, you can purchase authorized replicas in the gift shop (a pair of 1949 Leaf Veined Hands, $40, are pictured above). In addition to illuminating his relationship with American “pop” artists and later works, several large-scale religious/Atomic Age-inspired paintings are on display. The exhibit is exclusive to Atlanta, so once it closes, you’ll miss your chance to see it anywhere else.
Get High Through Jan. 9, 2011. Admission: $18 adults; $15 students and seniors; $11 ages 6 to 17; complimentary for active military and children under 5.
