Atlanta-based director Kenny Leon is scheduled to helm a new theatrical adaptation of the film Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner to open on Broadway in fall 2008. Dramaturge Todd Kreidler, with whom Leon collaborated on August Wilson’s plays Gem of the Ocean and Radio Golf, will write the script.
The play, like the movie, will be set in the late 1960s and tell the story of a young white woman bringing her African-American fiancé to meet her family for the first time. The film won two Oscars: one for William Rose’s screenplay and one for Katharine Hepburn’s portrayal of the young woman’s mother. It also was Spencer Tracy’s last film; he played the young girl’s father.
Casting has not been announced, but speculation is it will be an all-star production.
