For its upcoming Season 28, Signature Series, Lawrenceville’s Aurora Theatre will present what it’s describing as “A Winning Hand,” with Broadway-type musicals, thought-provoking plays and timeless holiday magic—each featuring a female lead.
The season begins with Broadway favorite Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Aug. 17 through Sept. 10. The Tony and Grammy Award-winning show follows the true story of King and boasts some of her classic hits, such as “You’ve Got a Friend.”
Next up is the holiday favorite, Christmas Canteen, returning for its 28th season Nov. 24 through Dec. 23. The musical revue features riotous bursts of comedy combined with festive nostalgia.
Two plays follow, Knead, written and performed by Mary Lynn Owen from Jan. 25 through Feb. 18, which follows the granddaughter of Cuban immigrants who mixes the ingredients of her past into a spectacular night; and Greener Pastures, by Lori Fischer, staged March 21 through April 7.
The season concludes with the musical Sister Act, based on the hit Whoopi Goldberg film which tells the story of lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier who must pose as a nun when her life is in danger and gets involved in the church’s choir. The show runs from May 23 through June 16.
“I’m so invigorated about Aurora’s upcoming season,” said Ann-Carol Pence, Aurora Theatre’s co-founder and producing artistic director. “Every performance will demonstrate the beautiful humanity of powerful stories. I’m especially proud that each show features a woman in the leading role.”
