The Pitman Painters follows British miners in the 1930s and ’40s, who hire a professor to teach them art appreciation. Ultimately, in this true story, the miners become painters themselves, are befriended by avant-garde artists, have their work hung in prestigious collections and are celebrated in high society. By day, however, they still risk their lives in the dirty, dusty, dangerous mines of northern England. British writer Lee Hall’s script is based on the nonfiction book Pitmen Painters. The Theatrical Outfit cast includes Richard Garner, Tess Malis Kincaid, and Brian Kurlander, among others. The Pitmen Painters runs February 27 – March 24 at Theatrical Outfit.
