TOP VOTE GETTERS AMONG COMPANIES

INCLUDE AURORA (31), OUTFIT (27),

ACTOR’S EXPRESS (22), ALLIANCE (19).

WINNERS CELEBRATED NOV. 5.

THE SUZI BASS AWARD NOMINATIONS are out for the best of Atlanta theater in 2017/18 and Aurora Theatre, Theatrical Outfit, Actor’s Express and the Alliance Theatre have much to celebrate.

Jasmyne Hinson as Shug Avery (left) and Latrice Pace as Celie are both nominated for their work in “The Color Purple” at Actor’s Express. The musical has 11 nominations. Photo: Casey Gardner

Aurora received 31 nominations, Theatrical Outfit got 27, Actor’s Express has 22 and the Alliance has 19.

Production-wise, the nominees are led by the joyous Color Purple at Actor’s Express and The Hunchback of Notre Dame at Aurora Theatre (both with 11) and Blackberry Daze at Horizon Theatre (10).

In all, the Suzis offer nominations in 33 categories to 16 professional companies  and 48 productions. The awards are named for longtime Atlanta actor Suzi Bass, a force of nature who died of cancer in 2002 at age 56. She performed regularly, and to acclaim, at the Alliance, Theatre in the Square, ART Station and Theatrical Outfit, along with North Carolina’s Flat Rock Playhouse and Blowing Rock Stage.

As always in the case with awards and voters, the nominations are subjective. Notably missing from this season’s list are Kevin Harry, for his hateful and repentant Mister in The Color Purple at Actor’s Express; Tinashe Kajese-Bolden as a haughty Queen Elizabeth in the Alliance’s Shakespeare in Love; Caroline Arapoglou as a beauty with brains in Synchronicity’s The Taming; and Taylor M. Dooley in a tour-de-force performance as the town historian and grieving mother in Synchronicity’s Ripe Frenzy. There most certainly are others, too.

The 14th annual awards ceremony is Nov. 5 at Oglethorpe University’s Conant Performing Arts Center. The evening includes awards, performances and a reception with nibbles and a cash bar. Tickets to the general public will be on sale soon. Now, the nominees:
