Old school, new student

Former American Idol Ruben Studdard is going back to his roots. The Alabama native is set to star in the 30th anniversary tour of Ain’t Misbehavin’, playing Fats Waller alongside fellow “American Idol” alumni Frenchie Davis and Trenyce Cobb. “I know most people are [expecting] to see the Velvet Teddy Bear when, in fact, they’re going to get Fats,” Studdard says.

Honoring the jazz greats

Thirty years ago, Ain’t Misbehavin’ — the original jukebox musical — premiered at the Manhattan Theatre Club and transferred to Broadway. It won several awards, including a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, which went to the show’s co-creator Richard Maltby Jr. Maltby also directed the 30th Anniversary version of the show, which kicks off its national tour in Atlanta this month, starring “American Idol” veterans Ruben Studdard, Frenchie Davis and Trenyce Cobbins.
