“Sustainable Shelter: Dwelling in the Forces of Nature” runs through April 5 at the Museum of Design Atlanta in Midtown.

Every living thing craves shelter. Moles and ants burrow into the earth. Squirrels and birds nest in trees. People, foxes and bears live in above-ground shelters. The needs of the dwellers shape the home.

A new exhibit at the Museum of Design Atlanta looks at this as well as how human homes have evolved over the past few centuries and the impact that this has had on the environment.

Sustainable Shelter: Dwelling in the Forces of Nature” is a highly interactive exhibit that includes areas where you can build your own sustainable home, see animal habitats, feel how much heat different kinds of glass let through and watch video. It’s a fascinating look at how the size of our carbon footprint has exploded since Colonial times and how smart design, and more efficient building techniques, reduce it.
