Cakewalk-[sm]-compressorThe Atlanta Musical Theatre Festival, now in its second year, introduces three brand-spanking-new shows in-the-making. In the Middle of the Ocean, by Chris Alonzo, is set in a brothel in the Atlantic Ocean. It flips the script on Ovid’s Orpheus and Eurydice myth, making it a feminist anthem in which one woman must duel with the devil. Cakewalk, by Beverly Trader Austin and Bryan Mercer, is set in 1917 in Claxton, Ga., where a powerful political family threatens to implode. Mother of God, by Christian Albright and Christian Magby, digs into the biblical stories of Mary of Nazareth. The fest’s 2017 home base is Out Front Theatre, 999 Brady Ave. in West Midtown.
