Georgia Shakespeare plans 5 shows in 2014

shakespearelogo2005Georgia Shakespeare will follow its just-closed season of retooling with a 2014 lineup featuring five all-new productions.

“We’ve heard a great deal of feedback from our supporters who have made it clear that they want more theater from us and more Shakespeare from us,” Producing Artistic Director Richard Garner said in a statement.

Specific run dates haven’t been announced, but the 2014 lineup shapes up like this:

As You Like It. Shakespeare’s “all the world’s a stage” comedy will open in Piedmont Park as the company’s annual outdoor production, then move to the Conant Performing Arts Center on the Oglethorpe University campus to begin the summer season.

One Man, Two Guvnors. Richard Bean’s adaptation of Servant of Two Masters earned acclaim on Broadway and in London. It will run in repertory with As You Like It and feature the company’s core group of associate artists.

The Frog Prince. Atlanta playwright Melody Long adapts the classic Grimm Brothers fairytale.

Henry V. Shakespeare’s band of brothers story.

A Holiday Panto. A raucous show in the spirit of traditional English holiday pantomimes.

The 2014 season is another step in Georgia Shakespeare’s multi-year process of reshaping its artistic programming to make itself reliably sustainable. The company was on the brink of closing in 2011 when it mounted a successful “Save Georgia Shakespeare” campaign. In 2015, according to Garner’s statement, the company plans to produce as much or more theater than it has in its 27-year history.

I’m delighted that you have expanded your season! I love introducing friends to the many options which you provide (dinner on site, pre-performance talks, meeting the talented actors) as well as fine performances.

    Bravo, Mr. Garner and troup!
