“It will be the wildest event of this century … last century … any century.” So promise Cheech & Chong, the iconic 1970s counterculture comedy team that stops at Chastain Park Amphitheatre on Aug. 23 for a little irreverence. Richard “Cheech” Marin and Tommy Chong still espouse hippiedom, free love and an affection for cannabis. The Grammy Award-winning toker jokers headline a bill that includes the pop-rock band War (The World Is a Ghetto, Why Can’t We Be Friends?) and the horn-heavy R&B group Tower of Power (East Bay Grease, Back to Oakland). Both bands have been making music for more than 40 years.
