Attention aspiring writers: If you’re looking for a place to hone your skills and learn how to make a living, the Scribblers’ Retreat Writers’ Conference is coming to the Lodge on Sea Island August 11-13.

The non-profit organization’s mission is to encourage literacy by producing conferences designed to “stimulate the writing side of literacy” that provide “a forum where authors can interact with publishers, editors and their peers.”

The Scribblers’ Retreat Writers’ Conference gives writers a chance learn from and network with people who make a living doing what they love. Over the course of the conference, there will be 10 sessions, each focusing on a different aspect of the business of writing non-fiction. They range from how to be a freelance writer to looking for a good agent. Networking opportunities include booksignings and informal coffee breaks. Writing competitions allow attendees to strut their stuff.

Speakers will cover many genres, including travel writing, dining editorials, cookbooks, newspaper and magazine writing, and memoirs. They will include nationally recognized journalists, community leaders, and former wartime and White House correspondents. Speakers and sessions include:

  • Kristi Sanders (our editorial director): “Traveling the Road Less Taken: Making a Living as a Travel Writer”
  • Rick Maier: “Three novel, ten-year journey of a Macon Author”
  • Sherry Paprocki: “Branding Yourself as a Writer: What Editors and Agents Want in Today’s Digital World”
  • Sandra Gurvis: “Surviving as a Freelancer in a Rocky Economy”
  • Susan Percy: “Journalism – You Bet Your Sweet Life It Still Matters”
  • Barbara Casey: “Everything You Need to Know to Find the Right Agent”
  • John DeDakis: “From Journalist to Novelist: or, How I Learned to Start Making it Up”
  • Krista Reese: “Everybody’s a Critic: How to Eat and Write Like a Professional”
  • Bert Roughton: “A Research Driven Life: The Painful Truth about Listening to Readers”
